Moving to VA, is front license plate required?

Good evening!

I'm moving to Manassas in 2 or 3 months to start a job with the FBI. Some training at Quantico, long-term job maybe in DC or maybe McLean, they're a bit fuzzy on this. I'm really looking forward to motoring around with the DCMM crowd once my schooling is over and the weather warms up.

Question: Does Virginia do rear license plates only, or should I anticipate mounting a front license plate?

Thanks!

get the tow hook license plate mount. No holes to drill!

I second that. John Law itches to pull you for any vehicular violation. Especially if your car "looks" fast or sporty.

The Code of Virginia requires that a license plate be both displayed AND attached to the front and rear of a vehicle (i.e., it won't do it to let the front plate sit in the front window, or keep it under a seat, etc.). See Virginia Code section 46.2-715 at http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+46.2-715

Not displaying a front plate as required provides an officer probable cause to stop the vehicle, and if the officer desires it allows them to write you a ticket. Including court costs, the price if you get a ticket is probably going to be in the $100 range or so.

Viriginia Highway Popos are not the friendliest bunch. Recommend avoiding at all costs. Living in Maryland tho, I run without a front plate...

DC cops could even ticket you for no front plate.
That being said, we have not had front tags in MD for 3 years, never been stopped. Three tickets in 2 years for no front plate on my BMW. Go figure. After the 3rd ticket I put on a front plate.

You can try running with no front tag. Don't know what the fine is in VA, but in MD it's $50. No points. No moving violation.

Got pulled over for still having the European plates on my MINI after I got it back here and the court costs where actually more than the ticket.

Thanks everyone for the quick answers, and thanks Ssallykat for the link to the external plate mount. I've got it in my favorite places thingy and will be contacting them in a few months. See you all soon!
