Anyone have a deck builder reference?

I called long fence, and they wanted $8500 for a 12x12 deck.

I got a buddy at work who uses a general contractor for a lot of things, and he got his 16x25' deck done for $8500. I got a quote from his contractor, and it was $5000. More than half the price, for a deck 1/3 the size.

I've got the $$$ for the right price. I'm looking for a 12x12 or 15x15 foot deck built on a slope, about even with the ground at the front, about 1.5' up at the back (because of the slope).

Anyone know anyone who can do this for a reasonable price, somewhat soon? If so, please post here or shoot me a PM.

Oh, and the work is to be done in Bowie MD.

Thanks.

Long Fence is notorious for high prices ...

Try Home Depot. They do build decks. Lowes too. It won't hurt to ask for an estimate.

I'll ask a friend of mine who works in that line of business.

neither builds decks...they sub out the business to contractors. doesn't hurt to try, but stay away from 'DeckAmerica'.....somewhat pre-fab stuff H-D sells. My folks got a $35k multilevel deck with gazebo from them about five years ago and it doesn't look so hot now, despite regular maintenance.

I got quotes for my second story 20'x21' deck from $18k-24k. The DC area gouge factor is a killer - they charge what the market will bear (which is alot!!!). That same deck in Richmond or Va Beach would cost half the money and the contractors there are hungry for the business, unlike DC. We ended up doing our deck ourselves for $3500 (then added a $2500 spiral staircase).

if you were closer, I'd say yes. I have all the tools now...bought everything we needed. I don't dig holes though....here was my yard (note the boulders!!):

My deck is under construction and should be done sometimes next week. It's basicly the same as your spec. Free stand 12'x12' on slope, attached to the existing concrete patio. We use Ipe' (Bazillian redwood).
If the job done and their work is good as I expect. I will let you know. I would prefer not to recommend them to you until I'm sure about their work. But so far their works look very professional. (this is the first time I use them as well)
I will keep you update.
