MTTS - Charlottesville to DC via Skyline Drive

I don't know how to make one of those cool polls I have seen elsewhere on the boards...sorry! Anyhow, I am wondering who is interested in taking the Skyline Drive route back to DC on Saturday. I am taking this route and I would love to have some DCMMers on the road with me. Should we devise a plan?

Okay, so far I have the following people:

Asya - OLDSOL (VA)
Haemish - SUV2BIG (VA)
Wendy
Minilla - MINILLA (VA)
MiniNurse
Hemi-Mini - USA-MINI (VA)
CooperCops - CPRCOPS (MD)
Iggy-MCS - PINTSIZ (VA)
whovous - COOP3R (DC)
ladybugmc
andrsncpr
Scavenger
WVMINIO8 - 1313 (WV)
Csparky - SYK5041 (NC)
ncdave
Cooper(non-s)

I'm in! I already got my KD fix... the only thing I'll regret about not going is if they do something "special" for it (besides free tickets) - but it's not as though it's the grand opening of the Italian Job ride...

I hear ya. Like I said Saturday, I have had my KD fix for the rest of my life. Not my cup of tea.

Great, I will plan on hooking up with you on Saturday. I will most likely see you on Friday too. Heck, I see more of you than I do my mother...heehee!

I think that if this is a go then rather go back west on I64 one could go north on Rt 29 to Ruckersville and then go west on Rt 33 to pick up Skyline Drive. That will still leave a goodly stretch of Skyline Drive as far as Front Royal which will take a couple of hours in itself because of the posted 35 mph speed limit. There's even a back road -- full of twistys that takes you from Charlottesville to Rt 33 in Stanardsville.

That's a scary thought! Come to think of it..I have to say, we have seen more of him as well than my parents! LOL

Saturday sounds like a plan! Count us in! There was some chatter about stopping off at a vinyard off of Skyline...but I have not had a chance to look online for a wineray in the neighborhood. but I am SURE there will be TONS of MINIs motoring with us on that route as well!

Forgive my geographical impairatude, but I am from the Midwest and just don't know where anything is around here.

Is it it possible to do KD and still get in a good Skyline Drive fix?

I am very familiar with the area north of Charlottesville. The hardest part is getting out of the city LOL! Later today I'm going to drive down to Charlottesville and make the drive via the back roads to Skyline Drive. This would avoid both I64 and Rt 29. If you are interested I could "pave the way" for a group come Saturday morning. Driving Skyline takes a lot longer than one would think just looking at the distances --- a combination of the speed limit, the need to pull over and take a look and the number of other cars on the road. If we join Skyline Drive at "Swift Run" which is Mile marker 65.7 and drive to the next northern exit "Thornton Gap" at mile marker 31.5 (i.e. about 34 miles) you will travel what many think is the best area of the drive with views both to the east and the west. Although it is (only) 34 mile it can quite easily take you 2 hours + (depending on how often you stop) If we exited at Thornton Gap on 211 it would take us down to Sperryville and then a visit to one of the vineyards in particular "Gray Ghost Vineyard" (check the website) http://www.grayghostvineyards.com from there north through Warrenton will then take you back to 66 for the run into DC. There's really no other way to get into DC without taking I66. As regards a time/distance schedule I'll post some projected times/distances later this evening after I have had a chance to make the run. This is just a suggestion -- if anyone else wants to come along that will be great. I haven't decided yet whether I'm going to actually go all the way into DC on Saturday or not, but I'll certainly drive all the way until we pick up I66. Any thoughts?
Regards Philip

I think that is an excellent plan. My only question is what time are we meeting on Saturday morning at the Omni? And thank you for doing this.

Minilla is going to lead the way. What time do you think we should leave the Omni? All in all how long do you think the trip will take?

I will actually be getting off of 66 before we hit DC. I need to make a pit stop at home and pick up a passenger for the game.

Timing

I'll have a better idea of start time etc when I get back this evening. I talked to the Gray Ghost Vineyard earlier and they would give us a group tour but would need to know a time -- I told them I'd get back to them. The charge for a group tour and wine-tasting is $3 per person which includes a coupon for $2 towards the purchase of wine -- good marketing! LOL! My feeling is right now that we should be able to get there (the vineyard) by around 2pm to leave by around 3 with the run into DC being another 2 hours approx from there.
I'll get back to you all asap.
Philip

I think I might want to jump in with you all too if the road is big enough! I'm a DCMM member but never get to do any events as I live in Blacksburg.

I think it will be my fiancee and I.

Thank you for pulling this together. Sounds like a great plan. Cool drive and wine before 66.

Should I add license plates to the list so we can keep a look out for each other Friday night?

Yeah, I don't think a 7 a.m. departure is necessary. Even if we leave at 9:00 and it takes us 6 hours to get to DC it will only be 3:00. Plenty of time to rest up before the Nationals game.
