Finally got an email back from Navteq on the I-66 Issue

Dear Howard,

We are pleased to inform you that our investigation of your reported
Map Feedback has been completed. Here is the detailed resolution
from our database tracking system:

Upon investigation, the I-66 roadway was found to be correctly
represented in the current NAVTEQ map database. The NAVTEQ map data
we supply quarterly to our navigation system vendors represents the
direction of travel changes in the I-66 High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV)
lanes to accommodate the morning and evening commute. While the
timed carpool coding in the map data is coded to reflect reality, it
appears that some navigation systems avoid these roads altogether,
thus causing non-optimized routing. We track items that we cannot
resolve and evaluate them with our business partners on an ongoing
basis to enhance our joint performance.

Please let us know if you find any additional areas that we need to
review. Once again, thank you for contacting us and for visiting our
website.

Sincerely,

Barbara

Something told me they would make a claim like that...

It's a BS response though, espeically since it doesn't matter what time of day, the map ALWAYS displays wrong...

Yea

I wasn't to thrilled with that answer too. Cause you know BMW/Mini won't do anything.

latest email...

Dear Howard,

There are many variables that affect the behavior of your navigation
system (e.g. routing instructions) that can be caused by a number of
different factors. These factors typically include: 1) the software
that is operating the system, 2) the navigation system settings, 3)
your GPS signal, and 4) the NAVTEQ map database. As I mentioned, we
do track items that we cannot resolve and evaluate them with our
business partners, including BMW, on a regular basis.

We do value your feedback, and encourage you to use the Map Feedback
form anytime you encounter a disparity between the real world road
network and your product's representation of it. We will gladly
investigate your future requests.

Regards,

Barbara

Translation- It's everybody else's fault but ours, and even if it isn't we're going to blame them anyway because it's easier than trying to fix the problem.

I have a theory on this problem, based upon the fact that NavTeq claims the time of day data for I-66 (inside 495) is correct.

Assuming for the moment that NavTeq's data IS correct...

Perhaps either the BMW/MINI Navigation hardware, or the Navigation OS, simply doesn't receive/record/process time of day data as part of the GPS signal? As I understand it, ALL GPS signals include date and time data... but I'm no GPS expert.

Hopefully the limitation is only within the NavOS, so that a future update will "enable" time of day consideration against map data.

Anyway, just an theory that serves no purpose, since it would take a BMW/MINI-connected engineer who knows how the system works to answer it.

Well

emailing Mini/BMW won't do any good. Unless we can figure out who over there handles their nav system updates.
