Goodbye All Season Runcraps

Hello Pirelli Performance Runcraps - they're a lot better than the all-seasons although no substitute for a good set of performance non-runflats. In preparation of MOTD - I had to get rid of my squirmy tires. It was cheaper for me buy one runcrap (I busted a runcrap on my 2005 MCS almost two years ago) then to buy a set of four performance tires.

Krut, what did you do with the all-seasons? They were low-mileage?

My Mini came w/the 17" Pirelli runcraps. They have handled great (for a runcrap). Just had them rotated so the rears aren't gonna be tread-loaded for the Dragon but I should be OK.

I am ditching the runcraps for some Goodyear Eagles in July

It's always about Marsha, or runcraps....

Well, I have to say that I've put 37,800 miles on my OEM set of Goodyear runcraps, I've never had a puncture, they are pretty noisy and they're getting buck-boardish. I've driven several MC and MCS without runcraps, and there seems to be a difference.....

My MCS was into MINI this week, and they pointed out that I was about 1,000 miles from my wearbars (38,700 miles on a tire warranted for 40K? Does that make me "driving Miss Daisey"?). At any rate, I decided to avoid the $1600+ I was quoted for OEM replacements and go with Yokohama Paradas and a pressurized can for about $500 instead, getting them tomorrow. I'm looking forward to the experience, and, quite frankly, I've never had a flat since I got the car, sooooo......

Now that I think of it, I haven't had a flat since...1996? I think maybe I've had three since 1976.....

You're just now in the real traction zone, if the rubber isn't too old. Just don't drive in the rain.

Yea, they were getting pretty good in the dry, but with the rainy season here, I had my first unanticipated hydro-plane assisted four-wheel drift around a turn yesterday--fun, but not to be repeated

For what? Were they gold plated? Thats $400/tire

Check Tirerack, far cheaper than that.

But you forgot that the Mini techs have to charge $150 a minute to install them

Oh yeah, forgot about that

Take them to an independent shop. Tireracks has lots of recommendation to mount and balance RFs that are FAR cheaper than a dealer doing it....

Who ever heard of buying tires and having them installed at a dealer? Would anyone do that for any other model car???

Global Imports quoted me $190 to rotate my tires . I got it done at Goodyear for $15 in 5 minutes So far my tires haven't fallen off & the Mini hasn't exploded or anything

Just got back from a 30 minute drive in the rain after picking up my MCS with its new set of Yokohama Parada Spec II's--nice!

I'm sure they'll probably take a couple or three hundred miles to break in, i.e., get the transport coating off of them and heat them up a little, but on first drive, what a difference: quieter, much more responsive on turn in and to all steering inputs, and a much better ride on bumps of all sorts. Definitely lighter feeling, definitely better in the rain then the Wear Bar Runcraps!

And I have to admit, they look awesome--sort of a science fiction tire of the future thing going for them.

Now all I have to do is remember to buy a can of that compressed flat fixer tomorrow....

Hopefully you won't need it. I had normal tires on my last MCS and in the span of two months got two flats - mind you I hadn't had a flat in more than 15 years before that.

That's what I'm hoping. The last flat I had was in 2003, but that was in the Australian Outback in rally conditions, 200 kilometres from the nearest pavement, doing about 100 kph on a broad, gravelled sweeper up to a cattle gate, driving my 98 Honda Odyssey (an amazingly good off road vehicle, by the way--the first generation lightweight version). A chunk of gravel about the size of my fist got stuck up on the inside of the wheel well, and chafed the inside of the tire until it exploded! Excitment ensued. Not a shred of rubber was left. And I had two spares along. At any rate, that was special cirumstances....

Other than that, last one must have been...1990?

Not the stuff sold at a local auto shop I hope, thats not the same thing. If you dont go for the OEM MINI slime your looking for something like this from Tirerack http://www.tirerack.com/accessories/...tkit/index.jsp

That junk from your local auto store is about useless. Its just compressed air with gunk in it ...try to get that into a flat.

The kits take out the pin inside the stem, insert the slime, then use a compressor to put air back into the tire.
