Gimmick Rally?
Gimmick Rally?
Does DCMM do Gimmick Rallies?
If you dont know what I mean
"As the names suggests, Gimmick rallies incorporate - some type of gimmick. You may be asked to count the number of one or some particular objects along the entire rally route; or you may be asked to gather information along the rally route which will solve some sort of puzzle at the end; or you may be asked to fill in blanks on your route instructions based on things you see along the route; or you may be asked to do all or some combination of the above -- or something else entirely!"

This sounds like our scavanger hunts, the last one was back in April and lead up to our annual meeting.
We're always interested in new concepts and ways to mix up the drives though. If you'd like to put something like this together contact Paul at events@dcmetrominis.org and he'd be happy to help you put something together.

I have done several of these in the past and they were always fun. Once the route has been laid out, some of the best questions I could remember were like:
"What does Suzy have?" Suzy had a bar Suzy's Bar & Grille
"How many mailboxes in front of 222 Main Street?" There were like 122.
Something like 25 questions but still had routing instructions like: drive 1.7 miles East on Main.
Just wondering.

On our first one we started it and finished it in the same spot... On the second one, the finish was in a different location. One of the challenges for the participants was to locate it!
DCMM Events -- It's up to you!
As a general comment -- all DCMM events happen because one or two people say "Wouldn't it be neat if . . . ". Everyone is encouraged to think up a good drive in your part of the world. Or a great place to eat. Or some fun event to run.
As a general rule, most successful
events have somehow hinged on FOOD
as a common denominator. DCMM has insurance coverage for it events, but so far there have not been any sanctioned competitive outings (unless you call "catching air" and "driving like a fool to catch up" competitive
).
It's been a long time since we have done anything north/east of Baltimore or on the Eastern Shore. Skyline Drive has been a great venue. Everyone has loved the roads in the Harpers Ferry/Antietam/Frederick area, even when we've recycled an old event. Cooperative events with nearby groups (Philly, Harrisburg, Richmond especially) have been fun. Think up some new ideas!

drive west 2.7 miles, turn left
drive south 5.4 miles, bear right at the fork
etc.
over a set course (but not TSD). I'm willing to work on it as the weather gets colder cause it might take some time.
My part of the world is your part of the world which means more rural counties (we be nearly neighbors). I'll think about it.
yes food is always good!

The idea of needing an odometer check portion would be fine -- I just hope that people can tolerate the needed multiplication
I think that a 10 minute pre-event briefing for the people who have never run a TSD event, along with a pre-event instruction that a simple 4-function calculator, is highly recommended.Don't underestimate the need for occasional breaks. I have noted that many of the participants seem to belong to the TWBC (Teenie Weenie Bladder Club).
And Balto/Carroll County would be a pleasant change. There are some great roads up near the PA border. I think we could get a good turn-out from the Philly area folks.
Great Idea! -- Tom

As to the 10 mile check, I'm sure they can do the math if we have to sit there and do it for them.... its just they have to calculate a number for every turn.
Remember, its not really a TSD ... just uses TSD routing instructions.
As to breaks... hehe, at my age, I'm also a member of that club, I know
Thanks ... it sounds like a fun thing to me. just need to hand out some prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd!

As long as we've morphed into event discussion in general  ...
Has there ever been "Fall Foliage" runs through the Shenandoah or up in Maryland? Not sure if that's a great time of year, because I'm sure the leaves are drawing out more cars on the road than normal.
I was thinking something around mid-October.

As long as we are throwing out ideas.... has the club ever done a Poker Run like a lot of Motorcycle/Boat clubs do? We can raise money for a charity and have a door prize for the best and worst poker hands? Just a thought...

Pleae help make this happen.
Any plan for '07 DCMM rally?
It would be so much fun since we have quite a few active members.
We can arrange it as a casual gimmick rally and using TSD (time-speed-distance) routing method.
Start in the morning and finish at a park for a BBQ picnic and trophy presentation.
It would be fun. I've tried the kind of rally couple of times, so much fun and it's not a serious event. Everyone in the family can enjoy the event.

- A Road Rally is not a race.
- A Road Rally is not illegal.
- A Road Rally does not require special equipment.
- A Road Rally is an amateur event.
- A Road Rally encourages novices to participate.
- A Road Rally is a lot of fun.
(aka; your friend, your fiance', your wife, your kids, etc.)--is given a set of route directions to follow, and the speeds at which they should travel the route. The route will generally consist of rural and quieter back roads. At the very least, you'll have a nice drive in the country! The goal of a Road Rally is to travel the correct route at the correct speeds, and arrive at "checkpoints" or "time control points" precisely on time. You are scored on how closely to the correct time you arrive. A Road Rally is not a race, and no rally will ever require you to drive in a reckless or illegal fashion. Arriving too early at a checkpoint hurts your score, as does arriving too late.
Lets the fun begin.
