I got pulled over!
I'm sure it will some way or another but its not like anything bad came from it. All the things they did were for their safety.
The more you know (tm)
Dave
I still watch my speed there cause I see police there often, especially at the bridge.
That's why, a lot of times, you'll see cops on the side of the road just letting people go that are obviously speeding... this is because they're sitting there with binoculars reading plates... it's a lot easier, there's much less training involved (anybody can do it), and one felony arrest looks a hell of a lot better than 5 speeding tickets! Believe it or not, *MOST* cops really are interested in taking bad guys off the streets, not lining the coffers of their state/county/etc.
I've been at the wrong end of a gun held by police more than once and it's enough to make you mad. Cops who washed out of the military are the worst. I respect cops, but please - leave your ego and power trip at home. It doesn't belong behind the business end of a gun.
(note, I said GET out, as in voluntary seperation!)However, I do agree. In my four years in Norfolk, i saw a lot of people who became cops just to get back at the people who, to them, made their lives a miserable hell. This is why being in the military, a plus in most places, is a definite handicap when being pulled over in Norfolk.
I know it sounds cheesy, but I joined the military so I could serve my country (signed the papers on Sept. 12, 2001), and I want to continue service to my country as an LEO. I've been a Speed Racer for a good part of my driving life (220HP Taurus FTW!), so I certainly wouldn't be a ***** about it! I mean, that's just mean.
No, I'm not trying to post my resume lol, I guess all I'm trying to say is that there are military folk out there who don't have big egos and power trips out there.
Now, that's not to say that I'm not intimately familiar with everything from an M9 to an M16/M203 to a 12 ga. to an M2HB to a MK19! heh heh heh... nah, just kidding. I wouldn't shoot you guys. That's so not old mutual.
since you're in Nawfuk, you'll get this - one of the times for me was in Va Beach.....I grew up down there and let's just say it's still an old southern town and the fact the buddy I was with wasn't white was what prompted the stop. Apparently, the local constabulary didn't appreciate that a black man is legally allowed to conceal carry too.
Hint: when someone you stop tells you about the weapon for your safety, chances are they don't intend you harm. Just sayin...

God, do I know how you feel. I used to do ride-alongs with the Portsmouth PD, and one time they told me, "We don't really care if you're speeding, but if there's more than one black person in a car, we can guarantee you're getting pulled over... cars full of black people are TROUBLE!"
Sad huh? You know what's sadder? Time and time again, he proved that he was right.
But I digress. Yes, being a black guy in norfolk is a big disadvantage. I can personally attest to the CC thing - I have a permit myself and often carry. I'm an average well-dressed (if polo shirts counts) white guy, and the cops don't pay second mind to the fact that I'm armed! In fact, it usually turns into light conversation about my funky-lookin' taurus with the lettering in the bumper, and then he waves me on my way.
So sad. But that's norfolk for you. Not as bad as the time I got out of a 135 in a 55 on the PA turnpike... but that's a different story for a different day
Oh wait, I meant mexico.

the funny thing about my run-in with VAB PD was that my buddy with the CC....his pop was the state delegate for Norfolk and a well-respected defense attorney there.
those dozen cops were lucky cooler heads prevailed and nobody got arrested.

I'm glad everything is OK. My wife got pulled over once at a light. The cop had nothing to do so he pulled her plate on his computer and came to realize that her license had expired, she had no clue. He noticed that she had no clue so he let her go. Some times they just pull your plate on their computers for the hell of it. I guess it is good because if your car HAD been stolen and the guy was playing it safe cause he had seen the cop, they would have recovered the Mini.
A few weeks ago Leona asked me to ride with her in the CR-V to hear a noise. It was 10:00pm and I was a bit tired, but what the heck. We drove up to the local school and I putt-putted around the parking lot forwards and backwards to try and hear the noise - no joy. So we're parked and I'm just putting it in gear and a MC Cop goes by.....Oh Sh*t, I turn to Leona, We're gonna get pulled over.....you watch ! So I ease my way out of the parking lot as he's turning around and pass him going down the street, he accelerates hard and is now on my bumper. Stop at the Stop sign, proceed and its disco time ! Pull over and he comes up, I'm pulling you over because you were in the parking lot and blah blah blah, I explain the noise thing and he says ok go home, so I did, still in my pajamas and with no license or wallet ! How embarrasing.
Sorry to take time outta your thread ! I've had a gun on me too, by a guy with a wine glass in the other hand
but that's another story !

I support police, they've got a tough, dangerous job and I'd always want them to err on the side of caution for their safety. But seriuosly, a 'at gunpoint stop' for a possible stolen car? And no apology for being held at gunpoint? In this case it sounds like WAY WAY to many glazed donuts and watching too many TV shows to me... What if you had started to sneeze and they thought you were reaching? We could easily have been short one NAM member.
Thank goodness you're OK!

Yikes! Definitely scary but I'm glad they're at least out there looking for stolen vehicles. If my car were ripped off I would want them to look for it, for sure. Still, very scary!
mmatarella I'm not surprised they had guns out, stolen car rings and chop shop rings are full of highly dangerous people who often have ties to drugs. The OP did the right thing by keeping his cool and letting thigns just play out. It's when people **** and moan and cause tensions to rise where things happen.

My wife got pulled one day while waiting for a light to change. The police office just checked her plate for the hell of it and noticed that her license had expired three days before. She was so surprised
that he knew that she had no clue....... He let her go after taking away her license and not giving her a ticket
.
It is good thing that they check randomly, if your Mini had been stolen he would have recovered it even though you where not doing anything suspicious.

Well a new thread on this has emerged... I can no longer have the plates "MNEEME"
Read here:

LEOs in most cities, either by choice or by rule, or both, run as many plates as practicable during their shifts in an effort to catch people with histories, stolen cars, etc. It's an easy, free, non-invasive way to catch criminals. Often, cops will only run plates while they're stopped due to the fact that they're focusing on driving while moving.
