NEW! Food Critics 101-NEED your input!!
Hello everyone,
As you already know, Laura (GreenCactus) and others have been working hard on the DCMM Newsletter. There has been a consensus to add a FOOD SECTION. Now I know you all love food and going out, so please give us your input!
Tell us which restaurant(s) you LOVE in the DC Metro area and can't live without. Please state why you love this restaurant, what you would recommend, where it's located, etc. so the rest of us can try it out. Two or three entries will be chosen for each newletter, so keep them coming! Do try to keep the entries short.
You can post your entry on this thread or PM me.
Thanks so much!!!
Christine

LOL. I dunno...you didn't seem to like the chicken sandwich at the Bistro I suggested
Actually, I once fantasized about being a food critic...perhaps this can be my big break hehehe
From this point on, I will be known as Anton Ego....

Sierras Grill & Taqueria
11619 Beltsville Dr
Beltsville, MD 20705
This is my favorite mex food ! My favorite dishes are:
1) Sizzlin' fajitas

2) California Burrito (Beef and refried beans)

3) Steak and Cheese Burrito

Their website still appears to be down but they are still serving, they've been in Calverton for at least 10 years.

Joss Cafe on Main St. in Annapolis
Hands down, the best sushi we've ever eaten, and I've eaten sushi all over the planet. Fresh, innovative dishes and a very cozy (read small) atmosphere. It's not cheap, but worth every penny. We eat there at least once a month.
A new Thai restaurant, named curiously enough, Pad Thai has opened on West St., also in downtown Annapolis. The pad thai rivals Chris's family's pad thai. and their crispy spicy beans are to die for. Two people can stuff themselves for under $50.
I could go on and on as there are tons of great restaurants around this end of MD. Let's put it this way...when I moved here 10 years ago, I was a size 4-6. I'm not anymore...

Think restaurants, Dave...you know, those places that you drive to and for some money, they feed you what you want, and you don't have to do the dishes?

Canton Cafe in Springfield Plaza (6396 Springfield Plaza). From the outside it looks like a typical bad Chinese take out, but it's not. It's one of only two good Cantonese restaurants I've found in the whole metro area. Popo (grandmother) approved. I order beef chow fun with black bean sauce as my test dish at every Cantonese restaurant - this one passes the test. Dim sum too, though I can't speak to how good that is there.
Closest I can get to the great Cantonese restaurants in LA and Honolulu.

I love Kabobs and there are a couple of great places in Arlington, Kabob Palace and Ravi Kabob.
For sushi, my favorite is Kotobuki. It is great little place and is cheap too. It is listed as one of the top 100 very best restaurants in the area by Washingtonian Magazine.

Tyler Cowen is an economics professor at George Mason and he has put together a website of reviews on the many ethnic restaurants in the area. It is a helpful guide for finding new places to eat and branching out in your restaurant choices.

Minerva seems to have become the Indian food chain of Northern Virginia (there's 4 total I think). Almost all my non-Indian friends like their stuff. I am kinda indifferent, I'll go there if someone else is going, not gonna make a trip there when I wanna eat Indian.
Jaipur in Fairfax has actually gotten a lot better since the first meal I had there in 2004 (especially their dinner).
For the vegetarians there is Amma's in Vienna, I live a block away and it's always packed during the week when I pass it on my way home. You can get Indian snacks (samosa, vada or the more filling masala dosa varieties with the spicy potato filling) or the Thali (kinda like a sampler dinner platter with rice, a few vegetarian dishes and a dessert item).
Finally if you wanna a fancy shmancy fusion (read $$, $$$ if you get too boozy) take on Indian food, there's Rasika. Went there last year for my birthday and enjoyed how different it was from the Indian food that I am used, while still preserving most of the essence of the original dish.
I know there are quite a few others that I've been to in the area that I am forgetting, but that's my tidbit for now
@clarkdr81 - Another vote for Ravi Kabob. They are also open quite late if I remember correctly. 2 or 3 am.
Ok, I am hungry after reading all that over again....anyone in NW DC wanna grab a quick bite??
Sorry, I am not very familiar with the Indian ones in Maryland, save for the Bombay Bistro in Rockville, which if I remember from 2004 was not too bad.

Lebanese Taverna, some of the best Arabic food in the region. The shwarma's great (shwarma = gyro/kebab, NOT shish kebab), the falafel (vegeterian meal made of spices, wheat, and chickapea seeds) is awesome, and the tea's excellent. Prices are decent, and the atmosphere is pretty nice, I haven't gotten a chance to go to the restaurant in downtown Baltimore yet (can't wait to go now) though. Highly recommended if anyone is looking to try a cuisine a little out of the run of the mill foreign cuisine.
The site's got links to locations for the restaurants and the cafes, they also offer ingredients and other Arabic food items (takeaway) for sale.
