Plasti-Dipped stock rims

So, I want to get new rims and tires, but right now I just don't have the money. For the time being, I was wondering if anyone has plasti-dipped or painted their stock MINI rims black. I want to see how it looks before I spend the weekend doing it.

Thanks!

These ones:

Painting sounds fine, but I think Plasti-Dipping the wheels would add unwanted weight and would
invite problems with balancing, unless you could get the coating really even.

Mine have been plastidiped since october 5000 miles. No problems, they look great.

If you want black wheels go for it. Don't let some one else tell you what's "in".

You just pulled the wheels off, put painters tape around the edges and did the spray paint method?

i guess it depends on the style the car is going for. I was just at the dealership picking up some oil and while waiting on it i recall admiring the clubmans wheels in the showroom and how nice the factory paint looks on thier rims... just seems a shame to go and make them look like steelies

now flat black/gloss/ whatever 17"+ rims i think look decent... you dont see many 17"+ steelies with low profile tires running around so they thus dont automatically resemble cheap steel rims

Both Checkercoop and I painted them instead. Benji did the same. 12,000 miles still looking (and washing) like they're brand new. Here's my writeup:

Did anyones car come with the 5-spoke rims like mine did?

I like the look of it, how many cans did it take to do all 4 rims just so I can be prepared?

I idn't tape the tires. The tape wouldn't stick, the plastidip didn't either. It peeled right off the tires

That worked for me. Your results may vary

My tires were factory fresh and nothing would stick to them. If tape will stick, I would tape them.

i taped my wheels...
it took my a considerably long time, but what i did first was paint only 1 wheel... and i was driving around like that for 1 week, just to see how the paint would hold up. it held up good so this past weekend i decided to paint em, i bought 5 cans but used 3 1/2 for 3 wheels.
i did 1 heavy coat for inside, turned them over and then did 1 light coat on front, then 30~ min intervals i did 4-5 coats.
meanwhile... i was cleaning the brake calipers cuz i wanted to paint them.
did 2-3 coats of red caliper paint from autozone.

end result, looks great.
although the calipers do get dirty kinda easy cuz of the brake dust.

here are the pics.

looks good! I feel your pain on the calipers... I luckily got rims with large enough openings that i can clean out the entire inside of the wheel as well as the calipers when washing

ty, i was rly doubtfull on plastidipping the rims, but finally had the time and courage to do it.
it was an exhausting job, but end results are good id say.

the rims may get another coat to smooth out some imperfections, but right now im dealing with putting in the turboback! so the rims can wait.

am i the only one with flamespoke plastidipped rims?

Just make sure you lay the lug bolts in the rims before you spray them so that they lay flush on the rim when you bolt them in.

i know what you mean about the lug nuts, but i didnt do it because i forgot and when you put the lug nuts in it will scrape the paint off anyway.

the paint is called Plasti-dip its in a blue can with some yellow on it. you can find it in home depot in the spray paint section, about 6dlls a can so its rly cheap, and if if you do get a chip or something you can respray wherever and it will blend in rly good.
