Anyone run a tire wider than a 225?

Just purchased some VMR V718 wheels 18x8.5 in matte black and am trying to decide what size tire to run. The wheel has a 45mm offset. I know 225/45/18 will fit, but I'd really like to run a 235/40/18. Any thoughts?

Not completely sure but from what I read and Pics. It looks like the 235 might be to wide unless you get a different offset or spacers for the rims. but the 50 and 55 have been tried and have had good results but depends on the look you are going for. Good Luck and psot some pics when you get them on!

According to this website:

http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp

You should be good. Assuming the factory wheel/tire combo is 18x7.5 offset 52, 225/45R18, it says that a 18x8.5 offset 45, 235/40/18 setup will be:

Suspension: 100% clear (leaves even more room than OEM)
Fenders: Package will stick out 12 mm (0.5'') farther. Acceptable for most cars.
Wheelwells: 100% clear (leaves even more room than OEM)

Your tire will be 1/2 shorter, so your speedo will be off.

That's a great website - thanks for the info. Still not convinced enough to pull the trigger yet. I'd really like to hear from someone who is running a 235....

Ok guys -- I bit the bullet and ordered my tires. Here is my setup - 18x8.5 with a 45mm offset VMR V718 wheels and 23/40/18 General Gmax AS03 tires. They fit - barely. There is about a quarter inch between the wheel/tire and the suspension components in bopth the front and rear. I'm getting my NM springs installed on Tuesday - will post pics after that.

Wow looks good without the lower! Will 245 fit with spacers?

I can't speak for TrueBlue, but it looks pretty clearly that the first photo (side view) is stock height, while the second photo (car at an angled view) is lowered.

Sorry for the delay in response guys....I was out of the country for a bit. The first pic is with the stock springs and the second pic is with the NM springs installed. To the post asking if a 245 would fit -- I seriously doubt it...with my set up, it's really tight. If you went with a 40mm offset wheel instead of a 45, it might work.

Just finished my 2 month long wheel/tire project. I installed a 2" lift (FinishLineWest) threw on my 20"x8.5" TSW Nurburgring wheels wrapped with 245/40/ZR20 Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires. Needed to use H&R bolt-on 30mm wheel spacers to fit the 245s. Was really hesitant about the spacers, but talked to a friend of mine who's a mechanic for Mercedes. He said the newer bolt-on type spacers are much better than the slip-on type... Really love the extra wide rally look.

frstrtdmac: sorry, spent lots of time, effort & money on this project and couldn't believe the first comment was criticizing... thanks.
before the lift shot.

youthanasia: 20"x8.5" offset+43

bmwr606: yeah, clearance is crazy now... if you do get it, think about bigger wheels or tires... after the lift, my stock wheel/tire looked cartoon tiny in the wheel well.

kidluck,

i was thinking of 225 or 235 in 70 or 75 profile on 16" rims in an AT type tire tread

bmwr606,

I want to go to a taller tire with more AT capability too. (Mich & Wisc. similarities???) Don't want to lose much handling and performance with the taller softer (no runflats next time) sidewall tires. May go a little more normal this time and go Allseason non-rf, and plan the lift for the next set of tires.

KidLuck... I see that you put spacers on. I was wondering if you tried to fit the wheels/tires onto the car without the spacers, and if so, where/what exactly was rubbing. Did both the front and rear rub? Was it on the strut or something else? Did the tire sidewall rub against something, or did the edge of the rim actually come into contact with something? Thanks for any info you can provide.

bmwr606: That's a great idea. yeah, for the winter i'd like to try something like that...

motogreg: at 245 there was front and back rubbing for the front tires and the rear tires wouldn't fit onto the hub. 235s might work, but i didn't try them.

Just checked those tires out... they look good, but from what i've learned, the largest overall diameter tire that will fit, regardless of lift, is around 27.7"

To get a bigger tire (overall diameter) you'll need to cut out some wheel well.

frstrtdmac: i apologize if my wording is ambiguous. Sometimes tone is tough to interpret through text. No problems here. Im good. Thanks for the complements.

It rides pretty smooth. Not as tight cornering as stock(some roll at high speeds) Breaking feels a bit top-heavy. Acceleration, i dont think, feels much different. Biggest plus is the confidence you have when hitting gravel or loose stone roads with big pot holes and debris in the way. Not a speed performance upgrade at all, but does help with the more off-road stuff.

kidluck,

27.7? that sucks, even the 215/70-16 is 28 inches

then how about this one? yokohama geolander a/t-s in 215/65-16 ... 27 inch diameter
