Swapped out RunFlats for Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus

So we just took delivery of our CM yesterday and I had them swap out the run flats for all seasons. I went with the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus. So far they have been great and the ride is more comfortable than with the run flats. We have the 18" rims. Just thought I would pass this info along to others that are looking at swapping out the run flats. I will update as we put more miles on the tires.

You will like the new tires.
I've got a set of them on "Merlin".
Great handleing!

Did the dealer just do the swap for you? If so, that's amazing, and I would have certainly done the same. Too late now, though. And yes...on the smooths, the runflats are noisy. On the potholes...wow. Large bumps. But I'm really growing to like the car.

Pardon the ignorance of someone who has no real familiarity with RunFlats.

In low-profile tires like the 18's, which tire would be more likely to absorb road irregularities or even potholes? RFs or conventional tires?

My thought process is that the RFs have a more rigid sidewall, hence they will not travel so far when hitting a pothole or going over railroad tracks. So they could yield a smoother ride over rough surfaces.

Bad logic?

Thanks in advance.

Your logic is correct, the runflats are super hard. So much so that when my wife hit a pot hole in our MCS last month instead of getting a bubble or a blowout like a normal tire, the tire was perfectly fine, but the lack of absorption/give resulted in $2k damage to the suspension and rim.

Dealer did not just swap out. I had a large amount in my Paypal and ordered the tires through tirerack. Then took them to the dealer and they changed out the tires before we took delivery. They bagged up the runflats and I took them home. Will probably just sell the runflats (they are Pirelli's) to offset some of the cost of the Michelins. We drove the CM around today on our Sunday errands and I've got to say the Michelins are awesome. The ride in our CM is actually better than our two year old Acura MDX!

lindseybp...So you had the Michelin's mounted on your original wheels?
I'm looking to switch over to non RFlat's perhaps Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus as well but also change out the wheels Tunnel Spokes. The tough part seems to find the correct wheel/bolt/combination for the CM. Thanks for the info on the Michelin's.

Yes, I had them strip the run flats off the original wheels and then put the Michelins on. We have the 18" anthracite turbo fan rims and I was worried they would scratch the anthracite when trying to pull the run flats off but they did a great job swapping out with no issues. Hope you have some luck finding wheels. Wasn't sure if dealerships could order just rims yet so not sure if that is an option for you.

OK...thanks again. Mine are currently 17" wheels...so I guess allot of decisions. Keep what I have and use them for winters...And purchase a new set of 18" rims from either Mini..if they would sell them..or look for some after markets. There is actually someone from this forum that's looking for exactly what I have...and is willing to buy or swap out for his. I'll call my MA today and see what he has for options...I'm also going to ask if he's gotten any word in regards to the cradle for the phone...they mentioned March

The parts guy ordered an iphone 4 cradle for me last week. He said they are starting to trickle out. Of course I don't believe it until I actually see it in my hand....

So far almost 400 miles on the Michelins and they have been awesome so far. No complaints at all. Good grip, quiet, comfortable.

Nice...Looking for the same. Just rather keep the all season run flats on the 17" for winter. Just waiting for some after market 18's or even 19's & I'm ready for Michelins. Keep us posted on that cradle for the I phone...I think someone else was suppose pick one up Friday as well.

iphone thread hijack

Not to hijack but though I would warn LindseyBP

I am pretty sure the only Iphone 4 cradle that has been released is the base one that does NOT allow media out

I watched the parts guy I was visiting yesterday drill through multiple ways to ensure this was all that was offered. I know someone else on the board ordered it expecting the "full fat" version and got shipped the colored water

They are still showing it as a July date

Hope I am wrong...

Tires

As regards tires I am looking forward to ditching the run flats - doing my best to wear out the std fit Pirellis (they are horrible in comparison to my Dunlop Winter SPorts I just took off)

Big problem though, even performing emergency starts I cant shred the tires with the grip of ALL-4 .....

Same happened with me...and received the basic only...fit great and was nice to get it off the seat and in a cradle, but an expensive phone holder/charger. My parts guy said he would make a call to Mini and let me know..he's pretty good in that regard. Well July is better than September which is what I heard a few weeks back. Thanks for the info.

I swapped my runflats after 13,000 miles to the goodyear eagle gt's. WOW what a difference! 1 my runflats got horrible wear not to mention we horrible in the slightest bit of rain. these gt's are amazing and with all the snow storms Long Island got less than a month after I got them I was extremely impressed and very happy in my decision!

7,000 on the Mich's in my sig - still as wonderful as when leaving Discount Tire - We could feel the difference before leaving their driveway! (Discount surprised us with a decent trade-in price for the OEM runflats with 2,600 miles on them).

Michelin rebate going on now to boot. Just bought a Michelin set from TireRack for the kid's 2002 Mazda Protege' and have them waiting until late Summer in the garage. He will need better rubber for next winter away at college. Not going to find a better price the way oil is going.......

I called parts earlier this week to confirm that it was the "full media" cradle and he confirmed that is what he ordered. He told me give it another week or two. Believe it when I see it. You can bet if I do get it I will post immediately.

So far I have been satisfied with the 18 inch run flats that came with my sport package. Mine came with Goodyear.

Anyone in Arizona looking to dump ther 18 inch run flats I will buy from you for what you are getting for trade in on your tires when going to all seasons.

Ship them on Greyhound. It's less than $40 per tire.
