Detailed info needed on Mini for Turbo
Hello Mini fans!
I hope this is in the right area!? I will be doing mini612's turbo soon. I was wondering if anyone had links and information regarding the mini motors. I've read through lots of posts here regarding trannys, electronics, motor limits, mht, etc. I had a few questions that still needed answers and was hoping you guys here could shine in. Maybe even pass this trend to the right guys to contact or links.
First off...do you guys know the guys that actually boosted their non 'S' minis?...could I get their contacts if possible?
Anyone know what was interchangable from the 's' to the non s? My roommate's mini an 02 I believe non 's'. Parts, I mean then injectors. What cc was the injectors on the S models? Were they positioned on the manifold on the S at the same spot?
Does anyone know a site or link where they showed a nice detailed diagram of the mini motors?
I will be using a piggyback system for the fuel but I was also wondering if anyone had the ecu pinout for this year? I'm trying to see if the program hardware that I've used before will work into these ecu's. If they do, or will work with minor modifications, this will be a great way of running different maps and wide band tuning.
I also read somewhere about the "Learning system" on this ecu. Does anyone know information about this system? Does this interfear with power modifications on the car and can it be disabled?
Does the S have the same bore and stroke but a higher deck to make up the extra low compression? Because the heads are similar, or was this due to the headgasket? I have a company willing to make me a lower comp HG but thats us shelling out 200+ for 1. Was this S model HG compatible with the non S?
I have done a search on this forum and a few search engines. I have found nothing as to detailed diagrams of the engine or more detailed info of the engine. I can't even find a simple ecu pinout. I have plenty of questions left for you guys but hopefully you can point me to the right person or site/link to get me going. I have turbo'd many cars before so I do have pretty good knowledge of turboing non turbo cars, and custom race setups. The purpose of this setup was reliability. I understand the driving conditions and driver will account to reliability greatly, but if the motor was as good as factory when boosted.....I will have accomplished my goal.
Thank you again for you help.

There's a thread here somewhere...
that has links to some docs that expain the differences in motors.
From what I remember......
Crank, con rods and pistons are different. Head and block and head gasket the same. S has oil squirters under the pistons. Intake manifold is the same, just different injectors (don't know the Coopers, but the S is 340 cc/min and the JCW is 380 cc/min).
If you really want to do a turbo conversion, get in touch with the Fireballed crowd, Ryephile has done it to an S, has has Spillman. There are others I'm sure as well. Get ready for lots to say "start with an S motor".
ECU pin out is in the Bentley manual..... But it's not perfect.
I think that's about all I can help with....
Good luck!

The trans is weak..yes. I'm also trying to find anything on the materials used to cast the forks, gears, etc. There isn't much on anything on the minis huh. I guess its learn as you go. I'm wanting to get in touch with the guys that did it to NON S models. We all should know why the S are making this power. Just because we don't have a all the top notch stuff, doesn't mean we can't boost. Force induction does strain a motor a bit more then high compression N/A, but there are ways to go about it making it safe......or should I say...safer. First with the trans, we have to find the weak link in the trans. What is making the trans break. Everything can break but whats a majority of the time cause. For example, Honda S20 1.6 sohc vtec trans are pretty good in performance. Gearing isn't close to F1 cars, but good enough for street/strip use. The major problems were the shifting forks were cast and prone to bending and breaking. Drag racers first custom'd their own forks to fix this.....once ppl saw that it worked and fixed "that" problem...mass production started. We just have to start somewhere and find the problem. To me...this is just a motor. Not that great in build, but it will manage. Atleast they had an iron block. Honda's had aluminum...so block reinforcing was a must. And like everyone else....why would we get an s motor to drop in when we could of gotten an S mini in the first place. We like the MC....no S needed for performance.
Oil squirters....I take it the S revs higher then the non S. Such negatives about the non S. If the block, head, and HG is the same...the lower comp must be in the stroke. Wow...I really need numbers for these 2 motors. It gets more interesting as we go. I'm so exceited to take this task on. And pinouts from a Bentley? Hmm.....Someone should have one somewhere. Anyone have shots of the non s motor and s motors? Insides I mean. A simple rod/piston swap from an S might be in order. But then...I'm trying to keep this as a non S internal swap.
OK...S is 340cc...good. Now (sorry for my ignorance) what is JCW? Do you guys know if the injectors are high or low imp with what kind of pulse? Peak and hold, saturated, etc? I read the positions are wrong on the mani too...making them spray onto the wall of the intake runners and head. Anyone have insights?
Seems like the valves are also diffent on materials. They did go cheap on the mini...let me tell you. But...we'll still make this happen. Our goal was 150whp with 2000 cash limit. Seems small...but we'll see who we know and what we can do.

Um...
encase it in concrete, inside and out, but I heard that makes shifting harder.
It's just not up to the torque. Get another from a wrecked S....

The getrag gearbox will take up to 150bhp without any problems, but the midland version will cause problems at anything more than 115bhp or so...
why do I say this?
In the netherlands, where I live, a team called M7 races coopers at 150bhp with, for as far as Im aware, standard Getrag gearboxes...
having said this, Ive mailed getrag in germany...
they said their gearbox can only withstand around 115bhp, which is a lot of crap in my opinion. Theres always a safety margin. The cooper s getrag gearbox can be fitted to a standaard cooper engine without problems, they told me (remind you this one is normally fitted in a car with standard around 166bhp, but it will take 250bhp as well)
Hope you guys understand me

you might want to try getting in touch with this guy. maxyboy. this is the thread where he sold his turbocharged mini gor 16 g's
