Crank Pulley ?

Has anyone installed a light weight pulley on their Mini, and if so did you notice a differance and was it worth the expense?

I've looked into it and read up on the installation. Unless you go totally backyard Shadetree Mechanic; the required special tools {The tools required for a cooper are different from the ones required for a cooper S.} cost 4 times what the crank pulley does. Even if some one was to give me the crank pulley it wouldn't be cost effective to me.

Had it done last week.....great increase in throttle response....hesitation at about 3200 RMP is greatly increased. Slightly concerned about using an undamped crank pulley, but Randy Webb (whom has done all my work on my car) is convinced (throught talks with Tritec motors designers) that the pulley is not of concern. 2 hours to install, 150 buck part....so about 300 total. Gave me an increase in about 8 hp.

With a Cooper you are loosing only 2lbs of rotating mass by going to a lightened pulley because it does not use a heavy dampener like the Cooper S. On a Cooper S the difference is 6lbs (Pre '05) or 4.5lbs (Post '05). I do not know how noticeable 2lbs would be on the Cooper, but I would not see how it would hurt the car in any way as it is not removing the OE dampening affect like in the Cooper S. If you have the time and money, go for it!

agreed with sumwon... effects defenitely wont be as noticeable

honestly, ive had mixed thoughts about the crank pulley, what i felt was just improved throttle response, but to me it is still not the 'must have' mod for my MCS... all i can say is that the effects would be similar, you'd feel increase in throttle response, but not real hp/....

Thank you very much. I was asking about a standard Mini. Doesn't seem to be a mod that many Mini owners do. And from what I have read from the S crowd it's not something I am going to waste my time on. Problems, Problems, and more Problems

I find it helpfull to think of it this way.

The motor can only do some much work, based on how much air and fuel are burned. You can put that energy into one of many places.... By putting it into rotating mass, you can't use it to accelerate the car. I did the math on lighter wheels and tires, and found that you could get on the order of 1%-2% "effective" HP increase, so it's like 1.5-3 HP increase. It isn't much....

For the pulleys, there are definite gains to be had, but the weight is much less, and the mass distribution is much less favorable (the mass lies closer to the axis of rotation). I'd have to take some time to model it, but 8 HP estimate sounds very high.....

If I had the money I would go for it. And a whole lot more. Specially if it was someone else's money!
