'02 MC - Quest for Intake Knowledge

Hi, this is my first post.. so slap me upside the head if I do anything wrong! (Bold for a first post, too... seeing as there are SO MANY other threads similar.)

There are all sorts of threads for newer MC and MCS intakes, but alas.. I haven't found anything on the older '02 MC.

About five months ago I bought an '02 base model MC. Right now, I'd like to get a new intake system. The Alta design seems complex, but like a very good system... However I don't drive an S! And, sound IS very important to me, so I am most likely looking for a cone filter(?). (Again, not the Alta.)

I am very new to this whole world, and have been lurking here for a few months trying to learn as much as possible.
---
So far this is what I have:
**The K&N has some fitting problems (Rubbing underside of bonnet), and the filter is not as up to par as most others?
**The Alta is not conical, and is not for the standard Mini.
**The Cobalt is generally a hack?

Also... don't flame me, but hydrolocking frightens me (whether it's urban legend or not), and does having a hot air intake instead of cold make a difference?

I'm young and in no hurry, me and my Mini will be around for a while, so I am enjoying looking at as MANY options as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated by the newbie. Thanks.

I have the Promini intake on my 2003 Cooper. It is expensive, but I think it is a good design. It does rub a little on the bonnet insulation, but it isn't a big deal (at least to me). See it here: http://www.rspeed.net/mini/item.asp?...2&prod=M20-145

BMP/Promini Induction on Aug 03 Cooper (non-s)

BMP/Promini. It does take a little work to keep it from rubbing the under hood insulation, but no big deal. As far as the K+N, same thing. If it's rubbing, it's not installed correctly. I've had both, but like the BMP best. As far as sound, see my gallery (QuickTime). The BMP was my first mod & that clip is with the stock header & exhaust. Good luck in the search for your intake!

I got the mossmini one. It was on sale for 50 bucks. It took me 15 minutes to put on and looks great. Sound is awesome around 4000 RPM. Best bang for my buck. I have an '03 MC.

I concur with the comments on the Moss Mini filter - especially at the price. In my case, though, it took a little longer to install due to it taking me about 30 minutes just to release the original one-time-use hose clamp at the throttle body.
No complaints whatsoever since, just grins!

First Post Noob....do not flame.

Ok, so I just bought a 02 MC for my woman. She loves it, and I think i'm loving it even more. LOL In anycase, I looked the cor over and it seems the intake boc is cracked where the 2 clips meet so the box doesn't seal completely. I was thinking of putting in an aftermarket intake on, but a bit afraid that the "boss" won't like the intake growl. Is there a intake system that does not make too much noise, but yet gives it better performance then the stock box? Thanks in advance.

Noob here....intake w/o the growl

Is there an intake system that doesn't growl like most intakes do? I just bought a 02 MC and upon inspection, I found that the 2 clips that hold the box down has been busted.

I don't think she will notice the intake growl too much. It really only seems to kick in at 4000 RPMs +. In typical highway or city driving at cruising speed, she should not even be able to tell the difference.

I answered this in the other thread, but I don't think an intake is going to produce any offensive noise during normal driving. You have to be getting on it (around 4000 rpm) to even notice any growl, and even then, it is not loud or annoying. In normal driving at cruising speeds, it is not discernable.

I agree. I have a K&N Typhoon on my '03 (which installed easily with no rubbing...the worst part was prying out the OEM air cleaner box). It only growls when you get on it, and even that growl is pretty well muted with the windows up.

I specifically chose the K&N over the Promini because of the rubbing issues, although most posts I've read from owners found this to be easily overcome.

I did a bunch of research, too, and wound up taking a recommendation from webbmotorsports.com. I bought an Ultrik (MiniMania's house-brand) intake, which uses portions of the stock airbox with a redesigned intake hose and foam filter.

If you're concerned with hydrolocking, this is probably the best system, as air must enter the hose, travel down into a 1 gallon box, and then go up into the filter element to enter the engine.

It's really not much different from stock, but was determined to provide about the same HP gains as anything else on the Cooper market, and costs about the same as anything else.

The generic hot air intakes that you see on ebay for about $20 are honestly not that bad in my experience. I had one prior to my BMP intake and the filter itself seems as nice as any other.

Buy a K&N 1550 filter, connect it to the throttle body using the OEM rubber boot that connects the TB and stock air intake and wallah... instant HAI for $35. Ajusa.com has the filters for $34.95, I believe.
