Short shifter mod...

is about the only one that interests me and would appreciate any information as to whether it voids the warranty, how difficult is it to install and do you prefer it over the stock shifting throw distance? Thanks.

I have the Alta short shifter and it did not void my warranty (at my dealer). A friend installed it for me, a little tricky but he got it done without much trouble. I love it.

I also have the Whalen **** that Doug made for me that screws on instead of using an adapter. Those two combined make a great combo.

Hard to imagine it voiding any warrantee. Installation is an hour or two depending on your skill level (moderate).

I have the Rogue/MiniMadness version, and it's the most pointless mod I've made to the car. Even with my Whalen ****, it makes shifting a small bit stiffer, and it accomplishes almost nothing useful. The only minor benefit I get from it is that it reduces the reach to third and fifth gear.

I recommend saving your money.

I find that because of the ECU holding RPM between shifts, for smoother shifting I have to wait a little bit between shifts anyway. So in other words, the shifter's length isn't limiting my shift speed.

Besides, I've read enough threads here and else where that people grab the wrong gear at the wrong time occationally (ever seen the kid in the integra grab 2nd instead of 4th on a 5-4 downshift?), and having the shift gates closer to each other will only make it happen easier.

What year is your car?

If its a pre 10/03 Build car, i would HIGHLY reccomend getting the Fidanza SS.

I had a B&M in my 05 MC, and it was sloppy and didnt reduce throw much.

The Fidanza in mt 10/03 Build MCS is unbelievable. They give you new solid bushings to replace the rubber ones, so shifing is much more positive. The shaft has a slight bend to it so it also moves the shifter a bit closer to you.

One of the best low buck mods I did, helped reduce throws greatly.

Also, in combination with the SS, i added Redline MTL Tranny Fluid and a very very lightweight Hurst "4 Speed H pattern" muscle car ****. the throw is SO much more positve feeling than it was with the heavier steel Fidanza ****.

I had the B&M kit in my 2003 Cooper, and it did not interfere with replacing my Midlands 5-speed transmission under warranty when it failed. (How could a short shifter cause the tranny seal to fail, anyway?).

I also ended up not really liking the mod. It made shifting much stiffer, which negated the fun of the shorter throws. At one point I even developed some pain in my right shoulder, and could only shift into fifth by pushing the shifter over with my leg.

Won't be happening on my '05.
