Valve Cover Improvement

I'd read a thread in the Clubman section about the non-S engine being "Anonymous."

That got me to thinking that this fine little powerplant needed some MINI mojo. A little trip to the helpful parts counter at Hendrick MINI rounded up part number 51 14 0 660 106, which is this emblem:

Now, the only problem is that little gem is $39.45. So, make nice with your parts guy or gal... It appears to be for use on the body somewhere, as it has mounting tabs on the back:

These tabs are easily removed with a Dremel cutoff wheel. That left a little stub protruding, which I ground down with a tapered grinder on the Dremel:

The black backing is a low-tack adhesive strip that I guess is used to hold it in place during installation, until the retaining nut or whatever is installed. I didn't figure that backing would hold up to heat, so I peeled it off.

I used Permatex black RTV silicone as adhesive. My initial application left too much of a void on the back, so I added more of the silicone than is shown in the picture (Sorry, this pic is off focus). I didn't want to make a mess, but if you use too much, this stuff can be pretty easily removed with a sharp knife, razor blade, or even your fingernail if the leftover is small enough.

Once in place, it won't move unless you bump it. It's essentially dry in a few hours, but I decided to let it sit for 24 hours before driving.

So, whatcha think? Isn't this what MINI should've given us "Justa" owners in the first place?

BTW, bigger pics of all of these are in my gallery.

My R56 Mini valve cover came with that same logo on it as standard. Yours must have fallen off or was stolen at the dealers. They are only held on with self adhesive tape.

Well, I don't know about the R56es, because I didn't look under the hood of one when we were shopping or at the GTGs I've been to, but the Non-S Clubmans (Clubmen?) come nekkid.

Yep, I have a MINI emblem on my R55. I took images of my engine when I picked it up in February but I just had to go out and check to make sure it hadn't fallen off.

Looks like they did away with that emblem by March '08, my 03/18/08 (R-56 non-S) build came without the emblem on valve cover.

I do have emblems like hoonu used on bonnet and boot, but would never spend $40 and all that time for my valve cover.

For those who like to 'shave' their boot/bonnet; it would provide an excellent use for the removed emblem.

My base Clubman has the emblem, as well, but I took delivery mid-March. It's a shame (and, frankly, poor brand marketing) that all MINIs don't have an emblem on the motor.
