Sorry I'm not familar with CA laws - what issues do you have with intakes? Which ones are legal for the S? What is the reasoning?

Intakes must be certified by CARB (California Air Resources Board) to be a street legal mod.

jivanivan,

What ever intake you install in your MINI, it must have the legal CARB stickers at the time of purchase. Otherwise, if you get stopped by some bored cop...he'll give you a ticket and you have to remove it in the presence of an officer.

I know of two brands you'll be safe with for CALI use. AEM or K&N cold air intakes are fine, but make sure to attach the stickers on the tube (in plain view) after install.

Hey Pooky,

The K&N Typhoon intake is available for both the Cooper and the S. Give a call to K&N for color preference and to confirm CARB certification stickers are available.

Here are the specific Make and part numbers:

Year Make Model Type Engine Type Part Number Description Comment
2003 MINI COOPER Mini Cooper AUTO 1.6L L4 F/I 33-2239 Air Filter exc. Mini Cooper S
2003 MINI COOPER Mini Cooper AUTO 1.6L L4 MPI 69-2020TB Typhoon Kit Non-US, 115BHP, 16v, DOHC
2003 MINI COOPER Mini Cooper AUTO 1.6L L4 MPI 69-2020TP Typhoon Kit Non-US, 115BHP, 16v, DOHC
2003 MINI COOPER Mini Cooper AUTO 1.6L L4 MPI 69-2020TR Typhoon Kit Non-US, 115BHP, 16v, DOHC
2003 MINI COOPER Mini Cooper AUTO 1.6L L4 MPI 69-2020TS Typhoon Kit Non-US, 115BHP, 16v, DOHC

Go to this site to read up more about their product line here:

K&N search

Let us know what you decide, but I gotta warn you...these legal intakes from AEM or K&N are pricey!

I am not sure about theirs (Moss MINI) being legal. I really highly doubt it! I have had personal experience with AEM for my already sold 92' Civic and I felt confident each day I had it on. Even if a cop stopped me, he'll just ask "Is this intake certified, where's the stickers...oh okay you can go."

Hi guys, here's the K&N air intake stats for the 2003 MCS also:

Year Make Model Type Engine Type Part Number Description Comment
2003 MINI COOPER Cooper S AUTO 1.6L L4 F/I 33-2270 Air Filter All
2003 MINI COOPER Cooper S AUTO 1.6L L4 MPI 69-2021TB Typhoon Kit Non-US, 163BHP, 16v, DOHC, supercharger
2003 MINI COOPER Cooper S AUTO 1.6L L4 MPI 69-2021TP Typhoon Kit Non-US, 163BHP, 16v, DOHC, supercharger
2003 MINI COOPER Cooper S AUTO 1.6L L4 MPI 69-2021TR Typhoon Kit Non-US, 163BHP, 16v, DOHC, supercharger
2003 MINI COOPER Cooper S AUTO 1.6L L4 MPI 69-2021TS Typhoon Kit Non-US, 163BHP, 16v, DOHC, supercharger

If you purchase on line, make sure to have the correct part number/color as you may have to call the vendor(s) to order. In some cases, the online stores don't have these intakes immediately available...so you must call them to place an order.

There is still a bit of debate regarding Cooper intakes, aftermarket is bigger for MCS right now so we don't hear too much as far as what intakes really make power for the Cooper. Most of what I've read discusses the change in engine sound more than anything, and lot's of claims of gains from manufacturer's. You can check out what other MC owners have done with various mods, etc. here:
MC Mods Thread

I would like to see some independent Cooper owners with some numbers on what various intakes have done for them - be it dyno #'s or 1/4 mile times.

I installed a new intake recently from NMC. I was presently surprised that it does not affect my low end power. I felt I gain a few horses when I rev it up. A good mod. Go check it out.

I have the moss and have passed cops on the gas no probs, it does smooth out the power delivery and a little more oomph on the top end. plus its cheap!

My understanding of all the air intake mods with almost all cars is that you can roughly 10 BHP from the increased flow, but that it's all on the top end.

With that said, as soon as I can afford it, I'm putting in a K&N direct replacement filter...

You will NEVER get 10bhp from replacing your drop in filter...NEVER!!!

To get 10 HP, you'll need to get rid of the drop in panel completely and go with an intake system. Even then, I'm not sure you'll get 10 from the Cooper.

I just installed the MiniMania cold air intake on my cooper. They forgot to send the instructions, but faxed me a copy when I called them. Installation requires pulling out the stock resonator/snorkel/silencer, which is a bit difficult, but possible. Don't count on being able to put it back in easily, however. You also have to trim the rubber gasket at the inlet to the stock lower air filter housing, so again, don't count on reverting back to the stock system easily. The intake tube is a little bigger than stock, with a larger entry into the air filter housing and eliminates the stock resonator/etc. The air filter housing top is different, but is almost the same as the stock one except the inside roof is smoother. The stock one fits and seals better, so I stayed with the stock top. A foam-oil drop-in filter is included, and the K&N drop in filter works with this kit as well. (or even the stock filter, but you might lose a hp or two). It sound like stock at idle, there's a deep boomy resonance at 2200-3300 rpm at 80% to 100% open throttle (It comes on fairly abruptly at about 80% open), and a mild to moderate throaty growl added from 3500-redline at half to full throttle. I did some 25-40, 30-50, 40-55, and 45-55 runs in 2nd gear with my Tazzo Vpc, and found avg hp were up about 1 hp from 3000-5000 and 3 hp from 5000-6000 compared to the stock system with a drop-in K&N filter. It seems a little expensive ($170 for what you get (mainly a new filter and a better intake tube), but so are all the other intakes. I like the fact that it's a true cold air intake, and like the sound overall, except for the low end boominess at WOT.
