Running rough - MPI - can someone lend some knowledge...

hi all. I just purchased a 1999 classic (MPI) and had it shipped directly to a painter about an hour away from me to get the roof and mirrors painted in white. the car has under 500 miles on it. upon contacting the painter, he claims tha t the vehicle runs extremely rough, and cannot seem to get to drive faster than about 40mph. he said the vehicle feels as if the timing is off. could this be an ECU issue? is there an ECU reset button? what are your suggestions?

Firstly, 99 mpi with under 500 miles?? are you sure?
something sounds wrong. even the collectors have got some miles on here (UK). firstly could be crank sensor. if not crank sensor then could be something within the engine due to not running in if a gen 500 miles. drop the oil and change oil and fuel filters and refil with 98 octane.

see if that helps

I forgot to mention last night, there is a fuel cut off switch at the back of the engine bay on the right hand side, but if this had tripped out then there is no way the car would start.

Is it missing? burning oil?

Had a bit of think as well as to what it might be if running rough, the ecu would be the last place to check as they are pretty soild. check and clean injectors, remember to replace the o rings.

also try removing the throttle stop. brass l piece on side of throttle body. its held on by two star bolts. that allows the throttle to open properly.

er struggling really can you get any more info about the car?

to answer some of your questions:
the vehicle is a 1999 w/ a 1972 title.
i resolved the issue - one of the spark had to be changed out. the vehicle had sat for a year.
thanks all

Dont mean to be a spoil sport so dont take this the wrong way but you might find you have more problems with that car.

if they were prepared to change the title for you you can damn sure bet on they changed themilage too.

do you have all the old MOT certificates to prove the milage? if not ask for them.

i bought the vehicle from this collector in the chicago area. he has bought 4 new ones in 1999 of that same year, including two 40s. he kept buying minis in hopes of getting the last year in that body. if you were to see the vehicle, you would have very little doubt that it is in brand spankin new condition. i can send you a picture of any part of the car you would like to see up close that can give you some indication of its condition.
