bouncing Tach

Hello all....

I have posted this on Minimania and i just am not satasified with the ONE reply i received.

I have an electronic Tachometer in my '62 mini and it has started jumping, which i hear is pretty standard for the older tach's. Okay, fine...i can live with that i guess. The tach i have is a
speedwell electronic rev. counter - 1960's model
its a speedwell (weston) tach.

But as of two days ago, it started reading 1000rpm's higher than what i believe to be accurate idle speed. (i had it idling around 1200rpms and now it shows 2200-2400rpm's) I made no adjustements to the timing or carbs, it is just suddenly reporting 1k rpm's higher. I checked the connectors last night and all seems proper and well connected.
if the voltage stabalizer is bad, wouldnt all the instruments be acting funny? and if it is just isolated to noise comming off the generator, wouldnt that run through the Voltage Stabalizer as well?

Don't have one of those but...

My 79 didn't have a tach so I hung an electronic one. They can be had pretty cheap. What about picking up a cheapo and verifying your RPM. Heck, you could even look for a hand held (do they still sell those?).

Sounds to me like the tack may be failing..... But I'm no expert.

I don't suppose there's a switch inside like my cheap-o which is used to tell the tach if there's 4, 6 or 8 cyl.... if it now thinks you have 8 instead or 4 it would think you had twice the RPM.... if I got that math right....

p.s. try asking at SunShineMinis.com

They seem to get some good turnaround.

The most knowledgeable experts on classic Mini parts & repairs are found on Minimania. Generally, you will find spot on advice there, imho. You can always take it TTT for more input.

That's the popular opinion but in my short time I've founf MiniMaia to be opinionated and not very useful. Smaller bards have provided more useful info

Occasionally this one!

Didn't this originator state he started at M.M. and got nothing useful.....

oh well, i tightened up the ground and the bouncing/skipping has stopped, but its still 1000 out....(sigh)
I guess i will just wait till the winter to pull it out and ship it off for repairs...

thanks anyway guys....
