Check out this thread I started a while back:

some people (other than me) put some links to some good people to talk to or look for mini's
I can't afford another one right now so I am waiting. You should check out Turky's site. I drove by the lot every other day and marvel at the sheer number. He has over 15 mini's right now.

If you are thinking about importing....
and this is a new thought, I'd recommend a little research into the rules of importing a vehicle which was not legal in US as original contruction. Either you should be learning the right way to do it - what you can and not not import; or learning which rules you are violating when you get 'creative'
(like a re-VIN of a 1995 Rover.....)
Who said that?
My 79 aproaches its one year anniversary in the States ...
The process isn't really that hard or expensive, just a bit time consuming. In some cases it can be cheaper to send a car from UK to East Coast than from East Coast to CA!

Is there any ways of getting minis into this contry that are totaly legal i heared that you cant inport them anymore legaly I also heard that Boyd Cotington just got a bunch of his cars taken away from him for re-vining or somthing like that because the state of california started cracking down on that
It would suck to get a mini and then get it taken away becuse they figered out that you re-vined the car

I Ain't An Expert....
My 79 was imported fm UK last year and is titled
This form http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/...hs799short.pdf
is the DOT form that lists the exemptions for non-compliant vehicles to
be brought into the US.
The first listed exemption begins: The vehicle is 25 or more years old or...
that's the block checked on my form.
Hence in 2004, the car must have been built in 1979 or earlier. There are other hoops to jump thru with duty and agriculture inspections (don't grow anything in the car!!!) but this is the one that covers the "non compliant" vehicle in terms of pollution control, bumpers etc ... then ya just need to get it titled.
In my state, a vehicle registered as an antique must be 25 years old, I went that way. If registered as an antique the vehicle is exempt from safety inspections - but use is limited; I only drive it on sunny weekends. If you want to register as a daily driver, you must comply with safety inspections etc. Check into your state laws. Note that if the car will be a toy, special antique/collector vehicle insurance can be had (I pay less than $100 annual for "full coverage")
So if you find an '80 or older you can bring it in. 81??? well, question then becomes how hard Customs will chase a fairly inexpensive car in violation....much more fun to bust an exotic
The number of newer bodies in the country suggests not too hard {The Classic In Ital Job {new} was what year????}
Of course another block on the form says you post a bond and have X time to make the vehicle compliant....
p.m. me if you want to discuss more

Thats true that they probably would not mess with a low cost car they would rather get a million dollar car or somthing like that. That is probably why they went after boyd is because all his cars cost alot and there are alot of his cars in the same place.
Thats good for mini guys
