Carb identification help?

I've got a 60 Mini (to match my 2002) and need some help identifying the make of the carb. (I know it is not original) It needs to be rebuilt but I can't buy parts...No pictures of it yet, I'm hoping this number means something to somebody...it was attached to one of the carb screws.

FZX 1409
4 WK 706

It's stamped on a small piece metal. Any info would be great. Thanks.

You've got an S.U. HIF44 (as originally fitted to a Metro 1300 Sport from about 1982 on ... ).

Unless you are over-carb'ed, that would indicate that you have a 1275cc motor in your '60 850 Mini!

There are rebuild kits and plenty of individual parts available, as the HIF was used on a wide range of cars - if you need specific numbers, let me know and i'll see what i can find ( the needle, for instance, was a NZX8011BDL ).

Good Luck!

Thanks. The engine size was going to be the next question. Are there any features or markings that would indicate it being a 1275? Reason being, I recieved 3 additional carbs with the purchase. (2 dual webbers and couple of singles) Want to make sure it's not over carb'ed as mentioned.

The newer blocks have external ribs/stiffeners cast on, indicating an "A+" engine, as compared to a relatively smooth-cast "A" series block ... but when they made that change, some of the original clues were removed; if there is no indication (like casting/part number) on the back of the block, and no number tag on the top (next to the cylinder head by the water pump), the next most easy thing to do might be to remove the rocker cover and see if the head number is for a big-bore motor.

There are some other clues (like how the head is shaped and machined) and if you could describe more of what's under the hood, it may become obvious ...

I'll get some pictures of the engine tonight. I'm pretty sure it's a 1275..but better safe than sorry. Thanks again.

Well, I forgot to take my digital camera home...but here is the number on the front right (looking at the engine) by the water pump:

12HC14AA 120214

Will this identify it?

Thanks again.

The "12H" means 1275cc, transverse engine, and the digits at the end are its serial number ... the "c14aa" in the middle refer to to the equipment originally installed with - but i only have the codes for that up to about '81 when they stopped north american imports (they were things like what kinda gearbox, which fuel pump, smog control equipment ... like that ).

Wow. You really know your stuff. Can't wait to get her running at full potential. She idles fine but won't accelerate. After the rebuild of the carb..she should be pretty quick. Thanks.
