Does anybody on this board have any experience or knowledge about adding a first generation BMW MINI S supercharger to a classic Mini? I have an '87, that currently has A/C, which will be removed very soon. I have heard from some track rats that the supercharger modification is fairly straightforward. Is that accurate? Any and all information will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

yes, there are a couple of companies in England that sell kits, however you do have to have a modicum of mechanical ability to install it - for example, you have to pull the head to add a spacer to the head gasket to lower the compression ratio. And you really need to have a dyno tune done to make sure it doesn't run lean.

Drea-min, does that carb stick out thru the hood?

Thanks, MINI Dave! My mechanic will be doing the install, if I decide to go for it. I stick to surgery and let the experts work on my Mini and MINIs.

veggievet - I would love to add a supercharger to my classic!

The only thing holding me back is cost.....

One suggestion, if you have the engine out, change the final drive ratio to either 3:1 or 2:76-1, the main thing you gain with a supercharger is torque, the taller gears will let you take advantage of that and the engine will be quieter on the road too.

With 2:76 gears and 10" wheels, my Clubby turns 3500 @ 75 mph - it's very comfortable on the highway......

Here are a few brands of kits I like.... http://www.vmaxscart.co.uk/mini-superchargers/

Great info! I run 12" wheels if that makes any difference...I'm sure it does!

Does the engine need to come out for the supercharger install?

No and no.

The overall rolling radius is about the same between 10 and 12" wheels because the tires on the 12's have a lower aspect ratio.

You do not have to remove the engine, tho you do have to remove the head to change the gasket and add the spacer.
