Very specific tranny problems
Very specific tranny problems
Hey, looking to see if this is a common problem/easily identifiable problem. I just towed my car to a shop and would LIKE to make sure that what he may be doing is necessary/accurate, so i came here for help. I've been lurking for a long while.
Anyways...
The car runs, but the car doesnt move. Running, the shifter moves through 2nd and 1st with NOTHING grabbing at it, you can just throw it around without your left foot down. 3rd, 4th, and R have resistance, and grind if you try and head there without your foot down.
But... while the car was at speed and we were towing it, i though what the heck? why not put it in 3rd and see if something catches? no dice, with the engine off, at speed, 3rd and 4th are similar to 1st and 2nd when stopped.
i know thats some weirdly specific stuff, so i doubt its much help. but... any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

this could be many things .............
(1)does the engine run ? if yes...
(2) does it go into gear when clutch pressed if yes...If no (5)
(3) does it move forward or backwards If no...
(4) then this could be a broken crown wheel or ar a stripped spline on CV joint
(5)froozen clutch...needs stripping and replacing..........
Hope this helps ..........good luck.............

Not very specific problems. You describe a generalized situation that could be anything from hydraulics, to clutch, to driveshaft, to major gear issues or any combination. A good mechanic should suss out the source(s) of the problem. Get a written estimate B4 any work is done and at any point there is a change.
