Ahhhh.... ok, for some reason I thought you might have had sheep in the philly area...
But just to draw more co-inky-dinks... I was born in Bryn Mawr and lived in Merion Station before we moved to the farm. I had my first kiss at the Devon Horse Show on a ferris wheel...

It's grown up so much since I left.
Glad you're back, btw. Oh and sheep have small hearts, so being run by dogs will kill 'em.
Nite, I'm about to hit the hay! Love this spring weather- going to ride tomorrow (woo hoo)

Merion Station is very very nice,,, the houses are huge!! And the architecture is awesome.
I want you to know, Hal, that you sent me on a long search for the lyrics to Sweet Allis Chalmers... Never could find the lyrics, but did come across a bunch of the Smithsonian Folkways tunes
giggle...
giggle...
When I was growing up there were still a few of them. I had friends who went to Roxborough high...
OK, there was the Schuylkill Valley Nature Center (now the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education), Manatawna Farm (had cattle, don't know what happened to that), Renfrew Farm (horses & sheep - now Renfrew Center for Anorexia and Bulimea), and a few others on Spring Lane (mostly horses and sheep), Hagy's Mill (tended toward horses and cattle) and that part of Roxborough. When I was a late teenager someone took the farm across from SVNC and turned it into a subdivision. That's where my farrier & his family lived.
There was a gas/service station on Ridge Pike just east of Bell's Mill Rd, and if you went behind there, there were a bunch more farms... we used to ride our horses across Ridge Pike and back behind that service station to get to Wissahickon Park, where I'd also show horses. We'd also "ride" into the drive thru at Friendly's just west of BMR on Ridge Pike. It would always freak people out when we did that.
I just pulled up a google map, and that part of Philadelphia is still very wooded. There are a lot of subdivisions, but there is still a lot of land out there...

Sorry to hi-jack this thread... but I feel like I've found long lost friends, LOL.
OK, Gem, Merion Station used to be a horse race track back in the late 1800's. By the early 1960's, some of the big homes around where the track was had fallen into benign neglect. My parents, being newlyweds without much $, managed to buy the original clubhouse (complete with the ghost of one of the call girls who'd been murdered there), and I have fond memories of it, even though we moved from there when I was 4.
Cab, yeah, my father's family were all on the Main Line- mostly Ardmore and Bryn Mawr. That area had a dichotomy of people who lived there- it's "known" for the big homes (mansions) and tennis courts, but there were pockets of working stiffs that lived there and built back in the late 1800's. I've got photos of my dad's family, altho most of them are at the family business which was down town (the blue route took it in the late 60's). Even have the sign from the business, which was on Race Street.
OK, back to our normal on track, no deviations, thread... Anyone want an apple (oh I just crack myself up!)
Hey Ola, I've not been able to see your vids- I'm having puter probs and can't seem to stream the live vids... grrr... but from what I hear, COOL chica

OK, he was closer to Manayunk, which is SUPER trendy now... I was blown away- all those old woolen mills by the river (umbria street?) are now snazzy restaurants and shops. The old corner bars are gone -side note, there was a corner bar named Cap't Z's... Cap't Z was the brother of Dr. Shock, the later nite Horror Host on TV. Capt Z lived right around the corner from us, and his best friend was Wolfman Jack... someone threw a cigarette out the window of a car one time, during a drought, and there was a wild fire on our top pasture. Wolfman called the fire department and saved our farm. He also used to come to the local horse shows at the Wissahickon. Somewhere, I have an autographed photo of Wolfman Jack. My brother & I used to give him all sorts of grief when ever we'd see him - he ate it up, these two kids (like 6 and 9 yrs old, I was the elder), just goofing off with him...
OK, where was I ?
Waxing nostalgic... Think I'm gonna have to break into the hard Apple cider

And my first thought, when you announced your Monday "plans" was that we will have to meet up over a weekend for lunch now....
OK, Thanks to Cab, my computer screen is now a bit spotty (not unlike me, eh?)... One Granny Smith coming right up... Want a bit of cheese with that? I usually ask my kids that question- want a bit of cheese with that whine???
Hmm... my flight south, huh? Not necessary the story you think. The short version? I wanted to see how the other half lived...
The longer version... I wanted to get away from my family- including my extended family- and become my own person. When it came time to apply to college, I applied to 6 of them: Bowdoin (in Maine, and my first choice), Brown, Penn, U. VA (my second choice), Vanderbilt and Tulane. I got early acceptance to Tulane and Vanderbilt, and was denied at Bowdoin & U. VA. Waitlisted at Brown & Penn (which drove my Mom crazy as I'm a legacy on both sides of my family there). Brown eventually accepted me, and Penn kept dragging it's feet, so my Mom set up an appointment with the President of the University (whom she knew personally). He met with both of us, where Mom did all the talking and complaining, and then asked her to wait outside while he spoke with me. He asked me WHY I wanted to come to Penn so badly. I looked at him in the eye and said "Sir, I DON'T want to come to Penn. My Mother wants me to come here. This university doesn't fit me and I don't want to be in Philadelphia. Please deny my application and give the space to someone who really wants to go here." He looked at me with a very quizzical look, asked me if I was serious. I told him that Penn was a fine university, but just wasn't were I'd be happy. He smiled, thanked me for my honesty, we spent another 10 minutes just talking, and then he walked me to the door. 2 days later I got the rejection letter. Mom went into a tirade (I didn't tell her what I'd done until about 5 years ago), and I quietly sent the acceptance letter and check into Vanderbilt, which was my 3rd choice. By the time I graduated (1985), my mother was re-married to someone I couldn't stand
, our farm was being sold (the idea of mr. bad stepfather), they were moving to Maine (so I couldn't move there) and the East coast was going through a recession, so there were no jobs... Nashville had GREAT jobs, low cost of living, great housing in good areas, low crime and was a fairly "young" and small city. Plus the weather was fairly good... when it got bad (July & August) I went to my grandparents place in Maine. When it got damp and cold (winter), I'd head to Maine for some snow fun... I still have quite a bit of family in Philadelphia, but I call Maine my home, after TN, as it's been more consistently where I go when I go home...

No, but I just found the Manayunk website... it's sooo bloomin' trendy! I only seem to go back for funerals these days. When I do, I go find a *real* hoagie and a tastykake...

There are some really neat condos now in Manayunk,,, Venice Lofts, they overlook the canal 9 hence the name....) they are really trendy but the noise level off of 76 is horrible.... I love going into Manayunk and getting on the bike trail there, sometimes we head to Valley Forge or if really peppy can take it to Philly, another place that is becoming very trendy ( in my opinion) is West Chester......did you ever attend the Radnor Hunt 3 Day Event??

Wow!! What a story!!! Funny because I came here exactly the opposite. I love TN. I still love southern Ohio, PA. has been really good to me but I am sick to death of the overpopulation and high cost of living and I sooo miss the wide open spaces and rainbows,,,sadly my husband could just as soon live right in the city. I told him I would just wither up and die....this reminds me that I need to get my horse pics scanned and posted on here to show you. Okay, night night!!

YES! We'd go to the Radnor Hunt, but we went to the steeplechase races. I think my step-grandfather used to drive the 4-in-hand that would announce the races. Gawd, that was back in the mid '70's... I'm not sure I can remember that far back, LOL.
We used to hear 76 from our farm and we were in a valley, with a hill between us and the river. We'd also get the stench from the weyerhauser plant... especially in the summer.
I used to get all freaked out by Philly.. we'd go in for something & I'd start getting all nervous that the tall buildings were going to fall on me. Last time I was back, a couple of years ago, I was amazed at all the stuff I had missed because of my fear. Like the farmer's market. It's become a really pretty city, but it was really dirty when I was growing up. Or at least it seemed that way to me.
That said, I'm still happier in the country. Give me fresh air and trees any day!
Night nite Cab, Nite Freebies!

Morning Everyone, TN and Cab what great reading with my coffee, thanks...
*where is my smiley drinking coffee?*
I grew up in the country, and never got the feel for cities, as a matter of fact, I'm still serioulsy afraid of Philly, i guess the older you get the more you DON'T accept certain situations. Philly is too noisy and and dirty and too much crime and when ever i go there i can feel my blood pressure go crazy. Driving - forge it, I can not drive there, too crazy. I have a serious phoba of cities, same with New York. I like going to the shows and such but I wish i could blink and be there. But hubby likes to go there and has taken me to some pretty neat stuff, like you mentioned, Reading Terminal, being Italian it has some great food. We have seen shows and such but then I'm ready to come home to my little home that sits near horse, goats, and cows farms! This is where I belong. As you, TN, I understand what your saying on that. My deck looks out to an huge wooded and field and I love this location. nothing beats looking up to the sky at night in the country.
Manayunk is nice, we found a great greek restuarant there, and when ever we come back from a show or something in PHilly we stop there for dinner. beautiful town.
We have friends coming in to visit from Scotland in May and they want to see Philly and we plan on ending the day in Manayunk.
so that is my 2c worth of the city... sorry if i interfered in your conversation.

Yes PM had an event listing for Main Line's event this weekend, some members were planning on going down. We didn't do, too much to do in the back yard, and grandsons birthday present for next weekend.
Yes my Monday plans are still on "for now"
and so unless we meet at Otto's or a PM event we will have to do a weekend. I had a talk out pup last night and told her I would be gone all day Monday and she was upset.. poor pup got used to me being home all day... I think i need to go out shopping today....
We have talked about moving for years now, to a place with more wide open spaces.... but it never seems to be the right time,,,, I seriously don't think I will ever get my hubby out of htis house..... sigh
Cab- you make me laugh.... I konked my self for you!!!
ouch...
Where you live, it is a beautiful area!! We have gone to chestnut hill for a few rare occasions for dinner and love your area, not in the city but close enough to go see a show if you want! and some restaruants there are great!

Wow, so what I'm piecing together is that both Gem & Cab live in the western Phila area.. Gem out of the city limits, and Cab near Chestnut Hill?! Sheeeyat! I spent a lot of time in Chestnut Hill. Had a friend who lived on Germantown Ave, in one of those residential blocks between the hospital and the RR station, and she kept a pony in her garage. She was one of 4 kids, and her mom could be seen leading the pony thru Chestnut hill with 4 little kiddos on it's back. It was priceless. And that pony really had a good life, was treated well, their yard was her pasture...
Now that I remember back, we used to take riding lessons at Erdenheim Farm in Whitemarsh. I guess Mr. Widener had leased out part of his enourmous farm... the part I went to had all sorts of cross country jumps and lots of places to trail ride, altho we were in one of the arenas for class-if the weather was bad, we'd have barn days. Loved going to riding lessons.
ok, enough waxing nostalgic. Beautimous day here and all sorts of outside things to do. Happy Sunday Freebies!

We can get into the heart of Philly in 20 minutes, to the shore in about an hour and 20, to the Poconos in the same amount of time. So I agree it is a nice set up.
TN- when I drive into Galdwynn I still see the cautionary horse and rider signs so I think there are some people still riding around there. I used to ride with a friend and we could ride for quite some distance down towards Glen Mills/Garnet Valley area. We would ride up to the Grist Mill Park and let the horses drink in the creek there... I was blown away with so many "rideable" areas so close to Philly.
I go for the Steeplechase portion of the Radnor Hunt too!!
Very thrilling to say the least, GEM if you haven't been you simply MUST find time to go there- you can take your doggie along also. When our lab was still alive we would take him, there are a small grouping of kennels that we were alllowed to use while eating and shopping. The grounds there are gorgeous.
