Has anyone ever installed a carpet set?

Aaron at Outmotoring said that he put a set of this carpet in his classic and that it looked great (dispite the budget price):

I have a set of gray carpet in my car now (with felt padding underneath), but it's in need of replacement. I'm assuming that I'll be able to re-use the padding, but what can I do to keep the carpet from slipping and sliding around on the floor? I know that a variety of carpet tapes and adhesive sprays are available, but what keeps the carpet from sliding on the padding? Does one glue the felt pad down first and then put a second later of tape/spray on top of that padding?

That's the way I've done it in the past, back in the VW years. 3M makes a couple different strengths of spray adhesive, the more heavy duty can be found at a "real" auto parts store. I've always use the super duty stuff when installing the sections of carpet that are one more of a vertical plane.

BTW, my pad is more of a horsehair kind of thing then foam and on top of that they had a hard rubber mat of sorts. I replaced the horsehair with a piece of heavy grade household carpet mat (wool/foam) and reused the rubber mat. I didn't use any spray adhesive and my carpet hasn't moved. But them again it's had 16+ years to figure out where it should be.

You know - mine's more of a horsehair-type as well... I know because every time I get in my car the gray carpet slides around and shows it to me. Grrrr... I was wondering if I could use household-type stuff... Seems like you could get scraps all over the place for almost nothing.

IMO, I think the only concern would be it holding moisture. From the looks and feel of it, it's more sponge like then the horsehair product and could hold water longer. Are you garage kept, good window & door seals?

Yep, garage kept and the seals are sound. I don't plan to drive it in the rain, but might on occasion. it would be rare, though. I can re-use the horsehair stuff though - it doesn't smell funky or anyhing... Maybe I'll add a thin layer of rubber foam on top of the horsehair stuff for just a bit of additional thickness...

“Hmm, right is Smokey. Moisture leads to rust. Rust leads to holes. Holes lead to the Darkside“.

The main purpose of the horsehair pads is noise reduction. It’s also very porous to allow water and moistures to pass though.. You can always just remove it the padding and go with carpet only, but it will be one noisy Mini inside after removal.

BTW - Have you checked to see if your Mini leaks? Most classic leak like a sieve due to bad rubbers and seals. All mine Minis leaked through the door seals into the floor pan. To correct this I had to cut two notches out of the bottom of each door seals.

I've only had it i the wet 2 or 3 times, and after each dousing the carpet felt dry everywhere I checked. I can test for leaks when I pull everything out. I do notice my door sils are wet after I wash the car, but I can say the same thing about my 2006 as well...

I put that exact carpet kit in my '76. For the price, it was pretty good. My car already had the snaps riveted to the floor. All I had to do was put the other half of the snap fastener on the carpet and snap it down. There are a few pieces cut a little small, but again, for the price it was OK. The firewall and wheel well panels are a pain - you might have to make some relieving cuts to make them flat when you glue them in place.

I had some floor mats made up from a throw rug I picked up at a discount store. The rug was really colorful and prevented the floor from looking like a black hole. I cut kraft paper patterns and took them and the rug to a local upholstery shop. They cut the rug and tape bound the edges for me. Cost? $14.99 for the rug, $20.00 for the cutting. I like them so much that I'm going to get something like that made up for my MGB.

Nice Idea! I've got the Gray carpet and found a set of black mats for mine for around the same price. I like the contrast and added cushioning!

BTW, did this kit come with the 4 plastic seat rail strips on the rear section? If not did anyone transfer them?

Holes don't lead to the Darkside. They lead to the asphalt.
