Where to find a Mini?
Where to find a Mini?
Hello. I'm new on the board and was wondering where would be a good place to find a classic Mini for sale. I live in Wisconsin and would like to find a classic Mini to use as a daily driver.
Me too - MiniMania's classifieds are great, but don't be afraid to look eleswhere as well (newspaper classifieds, Craig's List for your city, etc.). You need persistance and patience to find a nice, clean car on a budget, so don't jump on the very first thing you find.
Also - this Buyer's Guide was immensely helpful for me, to know what questions to ask and photos to see before considering making an offer. It also has a great printable "checklist" that you can take with you - it's very easy to forget to check out crucial areas of the car if you're looking at it "on the fly:

Good luck!

Daily driver in Wisconsin....Classic Mini v. lots o' snow
MiniMania is a good place to start. Check out their dealer page as well and especially WestPaMinis.com (Pete, Alistair and Dan are great) You could have "Big Norm" in this board build one for you if you have deep pockets (based on what looks to be the quality of his work as I have no idea of his costs...but he sure puts together a nice looking car.) If you have really deep pockets you could go to Superfastminis.com and have them build you "one"
best of luck...ask a ton of questions... and take your time

Turky
Some love him, some hate him
but he usually has a selection
I like to watch his web page ..... http://www.turkys.com/mini.html
Add a standard dealer markup to his prices. yes you can find cheaper from a private party....

If you go through Turky, just be damn sure to check everywhere for corrosion or other surprises - I've heard some horror stories, but none that couldn't have been avoided with a careful inspection. Turky is a bit of an "agressive negotiator" though, so go in prepared to fight for every dollar (based on my own tentative negotiations with him on a few cars).
I'm currently having 3 Minis done by Phil at www.yourclassic.co.uk and so far have been really pleased with the process. One is a refurb (basically done now and ready for shipping), one a restoration (more than halfway), and one a complete build (just getting started). If you want one tomorrow, this isn't the way to go. But if you don't mind the wait, its an option to get what you like and know it's not a rustbucket.
UPDATE
Okay, I am taking back my recommendation of Phil Kruman at www.yourclassic.co.uk. In fact, I'm suggesting you AVOID using any of his services. If you have questions or want details, PM me.

I found my pickup at http://www.magazineclassifieds.co.uk/search/miniworld/. Be prepared to stay up all night browsing the selection. Once I found a few that I was interested in, I had the owners send me tons of photos. That helped me narrow down all but a few. Some thorough questioning helped me narrow down a bit more. Then when I was generally satisfed, I used RAC to thoroughly inspect the pickup for me since I wasn't able to kick the tires myself. Their service isn't cheap, but for me it was peace of mind (If your vehicle is close to Cambridge, give Phil a call instead of RAC. He's cheaper and more knowledgable about Minis). After all was said and done with the purchase price, inspection, shipping, import fees, etc. I still wound up getting it substantially cheaper than similarly speced pickups here in the States. Again, having one shipped from the UK isn't going to be as quick as getting one here, but there are plenty to choose from and even with the exchange rate sucking the way it does you can still find really good deals.
I recognize another Mini in the picture, so I think he's from the Los Angeles area. Probably a MOALA member at the very least. ...or it could be NorCal 'cause I spy a 7 Enterprises decal on the window.
