WTB puppy!!
im looking for a puppy and would like something medium sized and under 4 months old, w/ light to medium shedding. i have been looking at beagles, mini pinchers, puggles (half pug, half beagle), and jack russel terriers. preferrably male. ive only found 1 male beagle by me but ive stopped by to see it a couple of times and everytime hes sleeping and lazy. that doesnt seem right. a couple spots away is its brother which has been sold and hes crazy active. plus theyre a lil pricy at the pet shops. can anybody help me out?

You can find wonderful dogs, mixed or purebred, adult or young, in need of a home
The nice thing about rescue organizations vs petshops and many breeders is that they tend to really test and get to know the animal's personality and work to match it to your lifestyle and expectations. From what I have experienced they want the perfect union and the dog to be happy and also want to take them back if it does not work out - it really shows the commitment and investement in the animal, they are not about just getting rid of it or doing it for money.

I had a great Basset Hound for years, miss her. My next dog would be a Corgi, very smart, small, but BIG fun. I look forward to seeing you new "baby" at a drive soon.
Theres something to think about, we could have a Dog Drive.

My parents have two dogs from a shelter, a basset-beagle mix (looks like a beagle, but longer!
), and a full-bred beagle. Both were adopted as lil' pups, and both are the sweetest, cutest doggys! (And as a side note, it seems that some show-dog breeders have a program with some shelters. If, for whatever reason (usually not precisely the right size or markings), a puppy is not suitable as a show dog, they will simply give it up to a shelter, where it's adopted almost immediately. Works out for everyone!)
Good luck in your search!

I have a basset/beagle mix! Greatest dog in the world! He does sleep pretty much 75% of the time, but all is well.
Definitely adopt from a shelter; I cannot stress this enough.
Good luck with your search!
Oh, and here's Gatsby!

As one who is a foster home for an animal rescue organization, I also have to say that adopting a pet is by far the best way to go. First, you are saving the life of a homeless animal, but there are other added benefits. A dog that has been through a rescue organization's program has spent a significant amount of time with a family who has trained and loved it and they can tell you exactly what its personality is. Second, you can save a good bit of money because rescue organizations typically don't release animals that have not been fully treated by a vet and are almost always already spayed/neutered and have been screened for serious possible health problems. Another bonus about rescue is that these organizations almost ALWAYS will take the animal back at any time for any reason. If it doesn't work out, you have an easy way out.
But, I also have some very good tips for buying a pure breed dog if that is the route you are going to take. First, go to dog shows in your local area and speak with breeders. They will show you what to look for in a puppy and tell you all about their breed. Meet their dogs and inquire about upcoming litters. Be willing to wait for a top quality pup from a top quality breeder. AKC papers don't mean crap unless you are getting a puppy from a breeder who is regularly showing the animals being bred. To get this type of top notch animal bred for temperment and health, be prepared to spend a lot of money. If you are not spending a lot of money on an AKC registered puppy, you are buying a puppy mill animal that is likely to have serious genetic disorders and long term health problems which will cost more than it would cost to buy a top-notch healthy animal. Pet store puppies are almost always puppy mill products and you should never buy a pure bred dog without seeing its parents and littermates at the kennel. Anyone selling top notch animals is probably going to price them very high ($1000+), but you are paying for quality and are willing to wait a year or so for the right puppy.
If you are not willing to get a great animal from rescue or spend the time and money to track down a top quality pure bred dog, then just buy the first cute puppy mill dog you see in your price range. It will be a crap shoot, and you are likely to end up with an unhealthy poorly bred specimen, but you'll get it now for the price you want to spend.
In terms of cars, here is a good way to consider a rescue animal. Imagine that a rescue animal is like a 3 year old used Mercedes and a puppy mill puppy is like a brand new Kia. You are going to have to drive this car for the next 15 years. Which one would you pick?
One more thing. . . Puppies are a royal pain in the a$$! I plan on having many many dogs in my lifetime, but if I never have to deal with another puppy I'll die a happy man!
I don't mean to sound harsh, but I have been working with rescue organizations for over a decade and do have strong feelings after working so hard to rehabilitate rescued pure bred dogs (Saint Bernards) and cats. I only want for you to avoid the pitfalls and heartache that too often comes with puppy mill products.

Good luck with your search, I hope you find a great puppy or dog, and I'd be willing to help in any way I can.

YuccaPatrol is right on! I wish I had enough time to educate you about the horrors of pet shops and the puppy mills that supply them! It's a hideous existence for the breeding stock and a terrible beginning for man's best friend.
Go rescue. If you don't go rescue, research the breed and breeders exhaustively and make an informed purchase. There is nothing worse than falling in love with a wonderful little furry bundle and having it die from poor genetics or cancer after just a few years...or to have the dog you love live a long and pain-filled life.

Thanks for all of the replies, advice, and help. i finally found a pup. Shes 7/8ths beagle 1/8 basset. born Feb. 22 (Washingtons b-day), shes only10 weeks old. shes undergoing crate training and doing a great job. I cannot decide on a name for, so some suggestions would be appreciated. I wanted a male named Cooper but its to male. So far the best name ive heard is Mini. I dont really want too of a femanine name or too peoply.... like sandy, or mary.... I got her in merrilville in. and found her in the chicago tribune. the guy i got it from got her and her twin sister from an adoption. him and his wife find places for adoption dogs to live. and make no profit doing it. her sister is still for sale if anybodys interested. $250. looks similar but no brown. black and white.
