Hafid, remember that classics are obtainable in Aus for reasonable prices.

Yeah....there's nothing like a good bunch of fish and chips wrapped up in butchers paper on a hot summer day at the beach...

except take out the 'hot summer day at the beach' bit, and it'd be even better!!!

It's a thought, but I'll probably go with a newer car for this stint. When (or if) I come back to the US, i'll look into a classic.

Or buy one in Aus and ship it back when you leave.

Surely that'd cost more than buying one in the US or Canada?!!

I've been to Wollongong, Sydney, Perth, Freemantle, Darwin, and Townsville. I think I might qualify as an Honorary Aussie, no?

Townsville I can see if you are former US Army, but Wollongong? Musta been a day trip when staying in Sydney.

Hafid, I'm not sure what the cost to ship a Mini from Aus to the US is, but the NZ sellers on eBay quote about US$1200 landed in LA.

A nice Mini in top condition can sell for US$15k or more. The most expensive Mini I ever saw for sale in Aus was an absolutely gorgeous genuine original Cooper S with the walnut dash, twin tanks, immaculate paint and interior (and boot interior) which was AUD$12k. The most I paid for a Mini in Aus was $2,100 for a good replica Cooper S with a roll cage, 1275, twin tanks...

In Australia, if you've owned the car overseas for more than 12 months, lots of the import duties are waived too, as it's considered your personal car, and not an 'import' for sale..

There are still registration implications.

I know someone who bought a 2001 325 convertable in Winnipeg, and then took it down to Florida. He had such a hard time selling it, he had it shipped back to Canada to be sold (obviously the KM/H thing was painful) - you'll have the same problem with Aussie cars (however, old mini's are likely to be in mph).

Australia may be a good place to restore the mini too - as there's probably more resources here to do that...

My ship spent a week in each port, and we pulled right into Wollongong on the way to the persian gulf, and Townsville on the way back from a different deployment. Good times... Well, not really. I lost all my deployment money in a Casino my first night in Townsville.

No, but you met and navigated for my brother, Matt (miniwildcat), in his PW/B MCS "Snowball II"! He keeps asking me if you are on this thread.
