anyone else a skier/boarder? I'm planing a big west coast road trip leading to amviv, thinking of riding Tahoe with my buddy who I'd meet there for a few days, then drop down to Mammoth for at least one day of riding then off to Vegas for AMVIV festivities. maybe even check out Mount Charlston (near vegas) for one day.

sugguestions? i'd be coming from So Cal
initial thought:
Los Angeles -> Tahoe -> Mammoth -> AMVIV
I was also thinking:
Los Angeles -> Park City -> Tahoe -> Mammoth -> AMVIV
and if I was really crazy
Los Angeles -> ??? -> Whistler -> Mt. Hood -> Tahoe -> Mammoth -> AMVIV

edit: so as not to hijack this thread i also asked my skiing question on the off topic thread https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ml#post2663163

I just got back from Whistler... Was there for a week, it was a blast, no new snow, and the locals said the conditions were not the best, but I am used to East Coast skiing, so pretty much anything is better then here... LOL

It was also Gay Ski Week..

As in route?

I-5 north to Sacramento, then I-80 or Hwy-50 east to Tahoe.
From there, Hwy-395 South to everything else.

I am leaving LA on Friday morning. I am guessing 1 am to get there early enough to rest and go on the drive at 9am. Let me know if you would like to caravan.

My wife got a summons for jury duty in the mail yesterday. She was supposed to go during AMVIV. Good thing I had the hotel confirmations as evidence that we're going to be out of the country.

Following is the world's most random AMVIV question:

Does anybody know the room number at the Palace Station where OJ Simpson got busted for the armed robbery? I REALLY want a pic outside that room.

Sorry to take the thread in this direction!

I was wondering if the Tioga Pass road will be open at the end of March. I was thinking of going through Yosemite Park on my way home. Cutting through the park to get to I-5 then North through Portland, Seattle and the border. Anybody here know?

Looks like it (HWY120) is closed for winter.

Look here at the southern & Eastern sierra section:

http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/mtnhwys.htm

Other states of interest for us left coasters:

http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/pass...e/default.aspx

Have fun and stay safe.

BTW - since the big flood in January, it has been fairly rain free near Seattle. Hopefully, it will stay that way.

Hwy-120 is always closed until Memorial Day. So is 4 and 108.

We will be taking 88 to Minden, and then south on 395, crossing into Nevada in 168 at Big Pine. Anything to avoid I-5 or Hwy-99.

Thanks for letting me know. I guess I'll have to plot another route that is scenic and doesn't delay me by too much on my way home.

Any of the PSMINI folks leaving on Sunday?

I'd recommend Hwy 395 up to Tahoe, then Hwy 50 east to Sacramento, and you can pick up I-5 there, or if you're really in a good mood, take 395 all the way to Susanville, CA, and then Hwy-44 to Redding and I-5.

There will be two additional attendees at AMVIV 6:

If all goes well, Quack Quack Jack and Quack Quack Jill should be arriving at my house within the next few weeks, and will be making the trek from Canada in our MINI and other members of our club.

Have they ever been to AMVIV before?

I don't remember meeting them, but I try to avoid ducks. They are evil and trying to take over the world.

if it was me I would leave so cal at 4am and forgo the rest when you get there. but that's just me I am usually out the door by 430a every morning to drive for 8-12 hrs/day anyways
If you are looking for a caravan, the club im in: Southern Calif Mini Mainiacs (www.scmm.org) usually does several caravans since there are so many people leaving on different days you might be able to find someone on there.
As for me, I am not sure of what day I'm gunna be leaving so cal since i might be doing a small ski tour before hand, the only thing I know for sure as of now is that I'm staying @ palace station Friday and Saturday night the rest is but thats the fun part

I'm not familiar with the geography/topography of the area, how are these routes going to be in my MINI this time of year going sans-chains?
i thought if worst comes to worst and if the roads are closed, i could park in a nearby city and hitchhike it carrying my snowboard up to the resort...

back on topic:
4 weeks til AMVIV!

Should be no problem, they're the main highways, and usually get first shot if there's any snow to remove. The way this winter is going, I wouldn't worry over much.

The QQJ's will be there! Excellent. Must pin a Ruthie memorial of some sort on them.

I know of at least 4 of us leaving on Sunday (Scoop, CocoPuff, Woodstock and MiniCharley). We will probably be leaving late morning and heading as north as Nampa, ID or Ontario, OR.

That sounds good. I'll try and make contact with you. The route I was planning was going to take too long (according to Google maps) to get home.

The quickest route took us through Ogden, Utah last time and Ogden was not the safest place to be. We saw kids in parking lots breaking into cars with out of state plates.

Maybe I'll see some of you there. I should be heading out from Sacramento with 3 empty seats.

If anybody is MINI-less, I'd be glad to host a ride!

Will be my first MINI event. :D
