Geocaching

Does anyone geocache and do you plan on treasure hunting down at the dragon?

Yes, we geocache! Unfortunately, we aren't going to be able to make it to the Dragon this year , but if we were, we'd definitely look up some caches! I was just excited to see another fellow geocacher!

I hope you find some good ones!

I had to look up geocache to find out what it is. Won't be doing any, but looks pretty cool.

I've found the one on Hwy 28 between Deal's Gap and Fontana Dam and a few others in the area. I keep saving the two on the dragon itself for sometime when I have some extra time to kill.

Gee, catching up on my posts and look what I see... My wife and I tried to do a little caching but with everything else going on I think we only picked up a couple (one on the way down and one in Fontana Village) She was really miffed over the FTF snagged by the MR2 owner on the Dragon while we were all there

I'll be more alert next year- count us in for 2008!

There is one in the area I had plans to go to, until I found out I couldn't make it this year.

I think there is 1 on each end of the dragon, a couple on Fontana grounds, and another couple in the surrounding area.

I have thought about doing this a couple of times but never got around to it.

What is "FTF" and can you elaborate on the MR2 owner story?

FTF = First to Find... sometimes in a prize cache, there is a special gift for the person that gets to it first. Not everyone does that.

I only found 2. Pray it doesn't Break down at the Dam Campsite and a virtual up at the top of the Dam. The weather was a little rough. I'll get em next year. T-358 days.... but who's counting

Sounds like a good idea. I'm just hoping I can go again next year. I have a room reserved, but that falls the same week as our big sales meeting here, plus my boss goes to Spain, because there is some festival that happens every 1st weekend in May. Maybe we can change the dragon to the 2nd week in May, then I could go every year. (Wishful thinking on my part) I will know my status by the first of the year. At that point if no one has picked up and ran with it I would definitely help plan something.

Could be a drive that starts at the campsite where there is a quick micro, then move to the dam and up the dragon. There are about 8 that I know of. Overall, I think it would be a good idea. A little treasure hunting never hurt.

sounds great, but I live in Virginia Beach. Try to send a travel bug down here and see if I will be able to track it and find it. I would still be into doing one at the dragon if I can make it next year

Mrs.Zoom just let me know of a way to make your MINI a travel bug-
http://onestopcacheshop.com/oscs/index.php
sounds like fun, I've ordered one for Penfold and Tink. Anyone going to MME or going to be in the Atlanta rea for NECC? Check out podcacher.com for more info. If not looking forward to a geocaching event in 08.

I think there are quite a few. There where a bunch of finds on the ones at the dragon that got posted.

How about setting up a travel bug to see if it can make it to virginia beach for me to grab and re-send it back up. Or i can get one and try to get it up to you. I think I have some little mini trinkets I can attach a TB to. Just gotta buy the TB.

thats a cool idea i do have a travel bug sitting around here some where I 'll put a pic of my mini on it in a plastic case and when it gets to you you can change the pic to your mini. then maybe we can send it on other missions as well.

I was just talking with my wife and was thinking maybe we should have an event cache at the Dragon in 08. We could get it posted on geocaching.com once we figure out when we want it. Maybe even create a commemorative geocoin/wooden nickel. Then off to cache along the twisties! bwahahahaha

That would be cool! Recently discovered geocaching through a co-worker and am looking forward to "treasure" hunting.

This sounds interesting. I just went to the geocache website and signed up using my Motoring ID (MOTO767) since my NAM username was already taken. We recently won a Garmin eTrex and were trying to figure out what we would use it for. Now I know.

I'm really psyched this post is slowly catching on. My boys and I have a blast going out looking for these caches. As far as an event for the dragon here are my concerns.

I think it would be really cool but....

Some of the caches that are on the dragon are along some of the pull offs. Maybe room for 2-3 cars tops. I think it might be too dangerous to do this in large groups. We would also have to drive slower than normal in order to watch the gps, the road and traffic. If we could do it in groups and run them in 2-3 cars that might work, but the radios won't work that far to let the groups know that they are done and to send the next group up and continue to the next cache.

On a side note, should we move this to the MOTD 2008 forum for more discussion???

You can also consider placing some "event caches" in good locations that will be there just for the event. There is a way to post such temporary caches on the geocaching website.
