MINICup3: The Run to the Dragon
MINICup3: The Run to the Dragon
Once in a generation there occurs an event so epic, that it changes the course of humanity. Its impact is so profound it reverberates around the globe. On Thursday May 3rd , 2007, such an event shall take place...
Introducing MINICup3
The wide-open road will be the canvas for the 2007 MINICup3. This year's event will be held in conjunction with MINIs on the Dragon 2007. You will match your wits against all comers in a no-holes-barred rally from One Helix Plaza in beautiful north Philadelphia, to a secret checkpoint near the Tail of the Dragon in the beautiful Smokey Mountains. This one-day, six hundred mile rally will be a contest of driving skill and stamina. It will test the participant's ability to efficiently road trip from point to point, collecting precious goods and information, without breaking the rules of the road. Points will be awarded for successful route navigation, efficiency of time, data/goods collection and, of course, style. Points will be deducted for missed checkpoints and traffic violations. He or she who collects the most points and checks in at the destination will be awarded the coveted MINICup3, as well as bragging rights as the greatest road-tripper ever.
The rally begins at 8:00 AM on Thursday, May 3rd, where participants' cars will be lined up Le Mans style. All drivers (and hopefully teammate-navigators) will receive a sealed envelope with a triptych. At the sound of the starting bell, the envelopes will be un-sealed revealing the route and challenges for the MINICup3. The final check-in location will be revealed in the Triptych, where drivers will be checked in as they arrive. Then, on Thursday night, there will be an awards party and ceremony at Fontana Villiage for all of the participants, crowning the new MINICup3 Champion. All participants will receive a gift packet, as well as rally insignia for their MINIs. The cost to participate is $25 per car early registration until Monday, April 2nd, or $40 up to and at the event.

Minicup3 Questions....
Ok, so the rally is set up. A question:
I believe the distance is closer to about 700 miles, to Robbinsville. So if we average 60 MPH, that is just over 11.5 hours drive. Leaving at 8 a.m. puts us in Robbinsville about 8 p.m., a few hours after the Thursday nite dinner.
Are rally folks having a separate dinner? If not, may be better to start at earlier hour (and we can always find a Starbucks on the way, to stop at for the caffein!).
Your thoughts?

Eric rules but I as an unworthy peon would still rather start earlier to get to dinner (and the prizes). No doubt we will motor down from Stamford on Wednesday and sleep somewhere near Helix.
If we start too much earlier I might as well just sleep in the shop. Wait a second...we are next door to Yard's brewery...maybe ill just sleep there the night before and sample some of their fine beverages
Since we are so close to downtown Philly, there should be plenty of hotels within a 5-10 minute drive of the shop.

If this was more on my way I'd be in. We've done this with the MG club several times. Go ahead and bring me some of that BBQ.

We'll have a cold, brewery fresh Yards Extra Special Ale with your name on it Waylen. Knowing your propensity for insane road trips in barely street-legal cars, I would think you could hit the Dragon via One Helix Plaza in Philly. C'mon, bring the race car, I'll provide the ear plugs.
do i hear a bit of a challenge being thrown in there? just the mental image of donuts being thrown out of a MINI at high speed is funny
!!!

But I'll keep the brews cold waiting on you guys to get to Fontana.

Co-Drivers hare highly recommended, with a prize for the best team name being awarded, so think long and hard before naming your effort. Remember: If it's not written in the rules, it's legal.
