Horseback Riding

Would anyone be interested in going horseback riding? Fontana Village's site shows they have horseback riding, but that it is from memorial day to labor day. What do you think the chances of them opening it early would be and would anyone else be interested in this?

I might be interested. I have a Mini ride planned for Thurs & 1 for Friday but I was kinda leaving Saturday open since there was so much going on that evening. So Sat would be a good day for me . Let me know what you find out.

p.s...I am not experienced at riding so I would prefer a grandma horsie

It's possible, that since there is no riding from Labor Day till Memorial Day, that the horses are not there. Otherwise they would have to have stable workers on the payroll year round.

Just a thought.

I think the horses are there because the website says they offer riding "seasonally" outside of those dates & by appointment in the winter

I would give them a call and ask. I know there was interest in this last year, but I think the schedule got too crowded. With +200 more people this year, there may be more than enough interest to get a group ride together.

Let us know what you find out. I love riding. Up on Mackinac Island, if you tell them you have some experience, they let you just go off on your own with the horsies. Great fun!

Ok I called. I'm bored at work.

I could not get through to the actual stable phone (I got voicemail) but I did talk to a lady who knew the prices. She said there will be horses available for riding when we are there. They recommend a reservation. It costs $17.50/hr or $35 for 2 hours or $60 for a 1/2 day (& up from there but I figured 1/2 day was plenty long even for hardy riders )

The lady said to call 828-586-6520 to talk to the stables directly.

I have booked a horsie ride for Sat @ 12PM (for 2 NAMers). I booked a 2 hour ride (I may change it to 1 hour not sure but for now I am thinking 2).

I finally got thru but on a different phone # than I listed above. Try 828-479-2635. They have several 1 hour & 2 hour rides each day. I have a Mini ride scheduled for Thurs & one for Friday (plus the Panoramic pic is probably Fri) so Saturday it is for me. I know Saturday they have rides starting at 9:30 or 10; next is noon; then at 3PM.

If anyone else is going to do that time let me know

I would love to go horseback riding. I wondered if the stables would be open yet. No idea what my schedule will be like at this point though. I will probably know once they announce the time for the photo. I really hope I can fit it in that weekend!

Just call & book some horsies for when you want to ride. I don't know if everyone will get to go together since we all have so much going at so many different times. I am hoping that the weather is good so panoramic pic works out for Friday so I can ride the horsies on Sat.

If anybody else books for the horse ride Sat at noon let me know so I can look forward to meeting you

OK- Stop saying "horsies" please! As you may be able to tell from my NAM ID, I am a big time equine lover. Yes that's right- Equine. Say it with me now. hahaha My Appaloosas like to be referred to as horses not horsies. Sorry- I just had to say something- call it obsessive compulsive if you will.

Uh horsies was a joking term . It was meant to reflect my lack of riding experience which I referred to earlier in the thread not my mastery of the English Language & how do you know that your Appaloosas don't like to be called horsies? I have a friend who told me her horses prefer to be called horsies

I left this in the hands of my lovely and thorough girlfriend, and this is the results. A lot of the info has been said already, but just to rehash

If you cannot reach her then call the boss man's phone at (828) 226 - 4874. His name is Tim Crow.

Rates are $17.50 per hour.
The weight limit for the horses is 240lb.
Be prepared to leave your name, how many people will be riding in your party, and what time you wish to set out.
All rides are subject to change depending on the weather conditions for that day.
If you plan to cancel your riding trip please call at least a day ahead for courtesy.

*If you are planning to ride be prepared to ride. Bring long jeans and closed toed shoes.
We are booked for a drive on Saturday and made reservations for friday at 10. They said their may be a discount for group rates, but the stables just came under new management and she was not sure. My gf talked to Anita btw. As this is kind of last minute and a group needs to be 15+ we decided to just book time for the two of us, but anyone interested would be more then welcome to join us.

So my advice to anyone who would like to ride the "horsies" (I know, evil) is to call ahead and just set up an appointment when it is most convenient for you.

I say then, good fellows, I do hope to have the pleasure of your acquaintance for a bit of equine adventure. I daresay I shall be easy to spot, as I shall be most appropriately outfitted... in @ssless chaps

Donna & I did the horse rental thing last year, It was a fun ride throught the woods and up & down hills around Fontana Dam. At one point we were down by the spillway at the bottom of the dam, and a few minutes of uphill riding later, we were looking down on the road across the dam. This was Donna's first ride and I havent ridden in, well, let's just say a lot of years. We had fun and it was money well spent.

I have a good friend who is a farrier and even she says she's going to go play with the horsies so nah nah nah!

So are these Equine Excursions the guided tour type and is there opportunity for spirited riding? I hope it's not just moseying along atop some swayback haybag.

I use to be a Farrier and I hated people calling them horsie, because a horse is a horse is a horse of course .
