Replacement parcel/window shelf cord?

Hey guys,

My wife took delivery of her third Mini vehicle a few months ago, a very pretty 2019 F60 All4 Countryman S.

Today she was opening the hatch, which is motorized, and her window shelf was not aligned properly, it bound up and sheared off the passenger side cord at the very top where it fastens to the eyelet. I'm not sure if I can reasonably repair it.

Is there any aftermarket source for these cords? I imagine they cost about $3 to whoever supplies the finished part to BMW/Mini.

The only way Mini can address this is with purchase of new shelf at cost of $300+ which is pretty crazy considering the cord can be damaged any number of ways.

Thanks.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I'm having the same issue. I don't see any replacement cords available for a F60, but I see them online for a F56. Anyone ever find a replacement for a F60? Or know if the cord from a F56 will work?

Thanks!!

Yes I should have updated the thread with what I found to be the solution.

After being horrified of the cost of replacing the entire parcel shelf ($300 for the part 2nd hand from a parts company) I started exploring ways to make a repair.

In the case of my wife's parcel shelf the plastic nut that holds the draw cord had snapped off. There is a product called Sugru moldable glue available on Amazon and probably elsewhere. It is an oxygen activated moldable plastic. I was able to careful mold some of it around the broken plastic, then let it harden for about 48 hours at room temperature. Shelf works as good as new and you wouldn't even notice the repair if you weren't specifically looking for it. Wife is happy. Happy wife, happy life.

Thanks for the quick response! I bought a used F60 and the cord looks like it snapped off, with no sign of the bottom part left. Might just spend $10 on the F56 replacement cord and use that glue to adjust as needed.

Thanks for the help!

The glue can be molded into any shape you want, so if you are patient with it you can definitely fabricate a clunky looking replacement that will be completely functional.

If you really want to go nuts then you could create a mold of the needed part and then just mold the sugru into the exact shape needed.

It's a shame that BMW doesn't make some of this stuff available. If this happened on one of my Hondas it would be like a $20 fix to do it right with a factory part.

When I bought my 2018 Countryman it came without the shelf for some reason. I was lucky enough to find a used one at outmotoring for $199. They told me it was missing one cord but they'd include it, part number 51467388911 (under $10). I see that it is listed as an F56 part but it fit correctly on my F60, so as far as I know it's the same part.

Assuming the length is the same that is great information. Neither of two dealers I talked to could provide that part number

The length is a good point which reminded me of something. As I recall, the cord had two ends both larger than the hole on the shelf so I needed to take apart the large rubber side of it and then thread the cord back through the interior of that part after feeding it through the shelf. When doing so I needed to match the length of the other cord (which I did wrong the first time and then needed to re-do to get the lengths matching).

Great information, thanks! I actually ordered that part on Friday to see if it would work with my shelf so I appreciate the feedback. I called the dealership and they had a couple warranty parts that might be scrapped that I could potentially take one of the cords off of, but they haven't gotten back to me yet.
