Cool small towns/antiquing?

Hey native Colorado folk. Are there any small towns with cute shops or eateries or antique shops or flea markets within an hour or two of Copper?

Besides a few of the drives that's how my wife and I would like to fill the days.

Thanks
Matt

Great question! I'd like to know the answer too.

Mmmmm, shopping. It ranks right up there with motoring. It does a body good!

2 hours from Copper and you have Boulder (nice Brew Pub, but Breckenridge also has a brewpub and is slightly closer (as does Vail)... not exactly a small town, but it is cute... also Eldora is small and cute and has a few antique shops from memory (no idea how good they are)...

If you're coming in back routes: The Southwestern slope, ie Montrose, and further down, Durango, Pagosa Springs, etc... have some great places to peruse. My aunt is an avid collector and seems to find good antique shops on that side of the divide better.

Closer into Copper, I'd say Steamboat, slightly north, is a good bet

Antique row on Broadway, downtown Denver, has some of the best Antique shops imagineable. I'd say swing by there on the way north BrewSwap and east, Tig

You might want to consider going up to Lyons. It has Oscar Blues, good brew and food. http://www.oskarblues.com/ Check the website, you might find it a pretty good time.

Now the drive over might be even better. Drive down from Cooper and take Hwy 6 to Golden, Take 93 out of Golden towards Boulder, Take 72 (Peak to Peak) via PineCliff to Nederland, continue on PtoP to Hwy 7 then east on Hwy 7 down to Lyons. If you turn left on Hwy 7, you will wind up in Estes Park which is pretty good too. You can enjoy some of the best motoring in Colorado, just watch your speed in Ned.

You can get an idea from this map, http://www.coloradodirectory.com/maps/peak.html

A few small arty shops and antique stores in Lyons, too.

You can take Hwy 7 out of Lyons back to Boulder and check out some of the local Brew houses.

Enjoy,
Don S. (old81)

Although Denver isn't exactly a quaint small town, Antique Row in Denver (just 1.5 hours from Copper) is literally blocks and blocks of some excellent little antique shops.

PLUS (and more importantly, IMO ), the Detailers Paradise retail store is right smack in the middle of Antique Row! I know, I know... we really aren't in the "right" neighborhood but we couldn't help it.

So while your wife shops the antiques, you can come to Detailers Paradise for all the wax, polish, car soap, leather treatments (and more!) you could possibly want. You can even shop for Piloti driving shoes too! Or, at least swing by to say hi. We have a soft spot for NAMers.

I know I'm boldly marketing here, but I couldn't help it when I saw the post about antiques and Antique Row!

Here's the website for Antique Row:
www.antique-row.com

Enjoy!

-Heather

PS- If you are in the area, for antique shops or whatever, feel free to use our parking lot. Parking is scare on Antique Row but we have an enormous lot. Just stick your head inside our store and tell us that you're a NAMer and Heather said you could park there. (not that we'd tow a MINI anyway!)

for those in the mountains, not far from Copper is Frisco, on the western side of Dillon res. Main street there has a bunch of antique shops, and some great places to eat as well. Maybe 10 minutes east of Copper.

It is great to hear someone mention SW CO. Not a two hour drive from Cooper Mtn though.

I vacation there and now my parents have a house between Ridgway and Ouray.

And for those looking for fun roads to drive... There is the Million Dollar Highway (550) between Ouray and Silverton.

Georgetown, east of Copper on I-70. Historic Victorian mining town featuring the Georgetown loop railroad, and, according to the town's website, numerous antique, jewelry, clothing, and gift shops.

Leadville, south of Copper on 91. Another historic mining town. I don't know how much shopping it has, but it's kind of cute.

Fairplay, east on I-70, south on 9. Home of the South Park City Museum. The website lists a couple of antique shops, but honestly there didn't seem to be much there when we've driven through.

There will be 'Destination' rides planned for you

to both Leadville and Georgetown, as a part of the MITM event. Full details will be in your ride packet.

All you do is...pick the time you want to leave. That is it.

We will soon post the details of all 15 rides this year. As before, leave when ready with whomever you want.

Thanks,

Jonathan

If you are coming up through the southwest corner, making a stop in Telluride (look at my username ) is well worth it. We used to have a house up there, and it is a neat little town; so small it has no traffic lights!!

We have an antique mall in Leadville,"Western Hardware Antiques", 24 miles south of Copper mtn. With almost 60 dealers and 10,000 sq. ft. there is somthing for everyone. Leadville is a great historic victorian town with several other small antique and gift shops. We have 3 mini's and will be attending MITM2!!! Bruce & Hillery McCalister

Bruce, glad to see your post!

Be sure that you do sign up for the dinners also, both Friday and Saturday. Your registrations to MITM are a pre-req but we would love to have you if you have not already signed up!

See you next week...again.

Another vote for Georgetown... for antiques or for whatever! It is such a cool little town.

We were in the area last weekend (and get to return next weekend, too, YAY!) and happened upon a couple of places that you might enjoy visiting!

In Minturn, there is a farmers and artisans market on Saturday. I believe it goes until 2. As you enter the cute little town on 6, there will be a parking lot with a "Market Parking" sign. Then you can take a free bus into town. It runs about every 5-10 minutes. There were several cute little shops, too. The peaches were juicy, the organic dog treats were a hit and the Nutella crepes are on my "can't miss!" list. This would make a nice loop drive with Leadville.

There is also a farmer's market in Vail on Sundays (the state's largest so the ad said...). There were some of the same vendors as in Minturn, some higher end artists and less fun/funky stuff. Same good peaches, though.
