It's looking like a possibility. The conversation at the picnic definitely helped!

We now have 15 on the list that are going I am truly looking forward to taking my Mini to the track and I understand that VIR is a really sweet track!

As we get closer to the date we need to see how many want to run down together and preferable take the scenic route down.

Is anyone familiar with the track? Are there any tricky turns?

I have never gone down to VIR but friends that have love the track from a spectators point. Looking at the map, I don't know which course we will be using.

What ever course we use I am ready for some fun

The only reason I ask is cuz I just read on NAM and m|u about a fellow Mini driver who "didn't make it" trying to go around the infamous turn #9 at Willow Springs at the end of May. I want to have fun but hope everyone will be safe and come back home (knock on wood...man I think being a father is affecting me).

I have been to VIR twice once to just spectate and the other to spectate

and drive the Patriot Couse(the 1.1 mile track in the middle of the full couse)

I think that Phil Wicks will be using the full course (3+ miles). It is extremely

fast but with loads of run off room if you need it. Everyone will have a great

time plus learn a lot. Wish I could go.

DOes anyone know if a motorcycle helmet with Snell/DOT rating is enough for this class? Or does it require SA2005?

My understanding is that you (we) will be running the South course. The Oak Tree turn is very tricky but a blast to drive, it's a decreasing radius turn where the elevation drops off just at the wrong moment and if your not aware you will drift to the fence. Many of the turns are challenging with a lot of elevation change all the way around. Your going to have a GREAT time!! Sorry for dropping in on your thread and hope to meet some of you there! PS: Last time I was there they required a SA 2005 rating, you might want to call and check.

Minimarks thanks for your heads up! I will be on the look out for that Oak Tree turn. I see it at the very bottom of the map.

Minimobile, ya might want to check with Phil Wicks when you check on your reg. regarding the helmet rating. I believe motorcycle helmets are NOT SA2005 rated.

I was just reading the minimum standards in the PWDA Basic Rule Book and it states " a Snell approved helmet which has the current available Snell rating or the one previous Snell rating." I need to check my Shoei helmet and see what the rating is on that helmet.

On the Phil Wicks website you can download the rule book and tech inspection sheets if you what to read them before are packets arrive in July

Ready for some fun.

Here are a couple of pics from three weeks ago of my friend in his "new" Lola T70 at the Oak Tree corner.

It is an interesting corner.

I'm in!

I just spoke to Phil - I'm in.

If you're thinking of signing up, you better do it tomorrow!! (They're on the road today).

He said there's 4 groups of 20

2 groups - Novices
1 group - Intermediates
1 group - Instructors

For students, he has 2 slots left in Intermediate (now 1, that I'm signed up) and 4 slots left in Novice.

Now, I've got to find someplace to stay and see if we're doing a group run on the way down on Sunday!

Sweet....have you had previous full track experience? (non auto-x?) When I signed up for Wicks, I had not yet had auto-x class. But, now I'm wondering if intermediate would be better....

Soooo, what does your S.O. think about all this?

I told Phil I had done one HPDE school and by the end of the session I was cleared to drive on the track w/o an instructor. I also have had one Autocross school/day. He said that sounded like Intermediate.

He did confirm that we'll have instructors available to us, too. I sort wanted to jump into the novice group (being a bit insecure about the whole thing) but I think, now, it was the right choice.

Soooo, what does your S.O. think about all this?
Oh - I guess I should ask her

Actually, tried to get her to go but the combination of distance and being on a weekday killed it. Make it a Saturday at Summit Point and I can probably get her there.

Just an FYI per Helmets:
I sent an email to Phil Wicks Driving Academy: I have a 3/4 Motorcycle Helmet (open face), which is Snell/DOT Approved; is this helmet acceptable for the class?
The reply was: The helmet is fine. See you in July.

So, I believe I am good to go with the helmet that I have!

I'll also be at the Holiday Inn Express Sunday and Monday nights. Do not plan on caravanning.
