Likely a "silly" question. I was rear ended a few weeks ago and picked up my ALL4 from the repair shop 2 weeks ago - everything looked fine. I didn't notice a gap/hole in the silver trim piece under the bumper (on the left - see picture) until yesterday, when the car was parked on an incline. I never noticed this hole before and couldn't find any reference online. So I'm wondering if this is normal and has always been there, I just never noticed. Or if there's a cover that just fell off. Or, if the repair shop somehow routed out that hole to access something that was behind it.
Any insights are appreciated. Also, what's the official name for that silver trim piece?
You didn't mentioned the year, so I looked under mine. I have a 2017. I do not have that panel under mine. And from what I seen in that picture, I downloaded and explose the view, it looks like there should be a panel cover there. The edges look extremely clean cut like in the manufacturing the panel. I would check with the dealership and see if there was to be one there, and if so, go back to the repair shop. If you went through an insurance company, you might have to go through them. Also, if the repair was very recent and they left those black marks on the plastic panel and the exhaust, I'd tell them this was unacceptable. It should have been returned in like new condition.
Did they rebuild your rear end of the car with recycled junkyard parts? Looks like someone did a cut out for some kind of after market hitch or add on. Just a guess.
Thanks for all the feedback, which clarifies the situation/confirms my concerns. The repair shop did not replace the part since there was nothing wrong with it (the car was hit somewhere else, further up). Given that there was a supplemental estimate they sent to the insurance to cover for broken parking sensors, I suspect they fixed the rear end of the car to then notice the parking sensors didn't work. Then, instead of taking the bumper off, they just routed out that ugly hole to get behind the bumper and replace the sensors. They must have put a cover on the hole since I would have noticed it before, which may have fallen off. But since that region of the car wasn't hit, I didn't necessarily go underneath it to check it out in detail.
So I guess I'll now have the pleasure to fight the repair shop. They should just replace the silver trim piece/offroad design package - looks like it's only $80. Geeez.
