OEM oil filter or another brand of filter?

My complimentary dealer maintenance is up on my 2016 CMS4 so I'm getting ready to do the oil and filter myself.

Should I use an OEM oil filter or is there another brand worth using that's less $$... Fram, etc?

Thx in advance!

People have run into issues with non OEM filters. I'd stick with OEM MINI or from the same suppliers to MINI. Some of the Vendors on this site show the relevant info on their websites.

Not worth saving a few bucks and having to replace clogged up Vanos solenoids, etc.

Excellent to know. I'll definitely stick with the OEM... as I'm usually not a Pennywise, Pound Foolish type of guy!

Been using K&N -- no problems so far

Purchased a K&N oil filter on eBay after I bought my used 2011 Mini Countryman S.

It's been 2,000 miles since I changed it, no problems so yet!

I have used FRAM, K&N, and OEM. I have found the OEM filters to be the highest quality.

First oil change was a success! Def a tight fit getting out that filter cap. Good to be back with a car I can change my own oil on.... Honda K-blocks is a mess and used to have the dealer do that job + the cleanup.

Back in early GEN1 days there were issues with several third party filters ... they would collapse while being installed and ya didn't know there was a problem until later ....

Have not heard of this in a long time tho, and the GEN2 and later cars have different filter elements yet ...

I usually stick with OE myself but have also used MANN on occasion with no problems.

btw, when doing your oil oil and filters I'm sure you are checking the engine air filter but don't forget the cabin air filter as well .... attached pic is what my first cabin filter check yielded - something the dealer was supposedly checking during pre-paid maint'

Whoa! Good idea, need to check that filter TODAY!

I'm still in search for a list of items that need to be gone over at periodic intervals; diff fluid, cabin air filter, engine air filter, etc.

I use BavAuto's maintenance schedules. They have all that for your car.

Filters

So it really depends if you do a average oil changes you can use fram and k&n filters (I never used the Mann filters) but if you plan on actually going the 15000 miles before u get a oil change get OEM I hope this helps

What is the source of this info? Nobody should be running 15K miles before oil change. Even MINI BMW gave up on that idea. If a filter isn't good for beyond a few thousand miles why would you even consider using it over OEM to save $5? Makes zero cents.

Cheaper filters have been know to disintegrate, why would you want those fibers floating around in your engine?

Go with purflux or the Oem or a tier 1 aftermarket. The cheaper off brand filters tend to lint more and can clog the vanos.

I'll definitely stick with the OEM filters. Finding 0w-30 oil in the 5qt jug has been challenging. I grabbed 0w-40 for this go-around.

For sure stick with the original MINI as that is the only ones we use in our shop as you won't have the issues with size and crushing like aftermarket. Plus for the extra dollar it's not worth it. And if it's under warranty the dealer will try to void your warranty if you have an engine failure so not worth the risk.

Also we use 5w30 full synthetic rather than 0w30 so that will be much easier to find.
