Loose Gas Cap Warning & CEL

I did read a few posts about this topic, but they were pushing 2 years ago...so here it goes again

The other day while in the middle of a 20 minute commute a warning was displayed on the NAV and Tach screens. It read "Loose Gas Cap". It flashed a few times, then went away and I did not think anything of it.

The next day the CEL light came on and has since stayed on. I thought it was because of a loose hose since I installed a FMIC last weekend, but everything looks, sounds, and feels fine. I did leak a small amount of coolant installing the FMIC (pushing hoses around), but the reservoir is right at the MAX line and MINI connect shows an engine temp of 190-210F after 15 minutes of driving.

Any thoughts on cause? Should I be worried enough to go to the dealer?

Have the CEL read by a scanner and that will help figure it out. If you don't have a scanner go to Advance Auto or some AP store like them that can read the codes. Then we can help you.

Auto parts store said it's an evap system error. No code #, does this help?

Evap errors 9 out of 10 times it is the gas cap.

Agreed that it's the gas cap. If you have a Scan Gauge II or have access to one, you can use it to clear the code.

Yes checked the cap yesterday after getting the CEL . It was tight. I opened it, removed it, put it back on, and screwed it back down tight. CEL still on.

Getting a SG2 and will check then clear it..wanted one anyways. If it comes back, then I guess it's dealership time. I read stories that air gets trapped in the fuel pump and they have to replace it...

If the cap was lose and caused the CEL, it will take a few drive cycles to clear it.
