Politics aside, I'm looking for a place to store my handgun in my Countryman. I'm headed on a road trip through remote parts of NM and CO over the holidays and want to be prepared. There are lots of shady folks living out in those parts (ex: meth labs), and I don't want to end up on the wrong page in the newspaper if I'm broken down on the side of the road (thank you run flats) or stuck riding out a storm and I bump into one of these guys.

Who has a good place to securely store a handgun in a Countryman? Are there any products out there that will hold it in one place? Do you just put it under the seat, or are there contraptions out there for stashing it somewhere else? I'm fairly new to the Countryman, and FWIW, I'm a licensed handgun owner with plenty of training with the military. Just looking for a way to keep things in place where I want them in case things go south.

It's not good to you in the heat of the moment being in your glove box/under the seat/or anywhere not on your person.

If you go the IWB, make sure you have your CCW with you or if you get caught, you will be with gangbangers all night long at the joint...

Yeah I'm trying to avoid that if possible. CO only honors CCW for residents of the state it was issued from, so I can't do that. I'm thinking of trying to find a way to attach a holster on the underside of the dash below the ignition switch, but I'm not sure if I want to Velcro or screw anything in. I've got a belt holster for open carrying if I find myself waiting for AAA to send a tow truck or something

glad you're military trained and are able to evaluate the depth of a situation that you'd need to keep it that close at hand for, otherwise it becomes another road rage killing byline.

my 2 bits... with the situations you're hypothetically speaking of, storing it far enough away that it requires a conscious, intentional effort to access would seem like the safest place... for everyone.

If you do not have a CCW for a particular state you're travelling through then storing it within reach will potentially land you in a bad place with the law.

Follow the laws of the state for transporting a firearm.

So he'll be just fine to have a loaded handgun in the car. Do you have a CCW from NM? Or no? If you do, you may carry concealed in Colorado.

As for a location for the weapon, I would choose either underneath the front seat (not very accessible) or between either of the front seats and the center console. If you have a soft holster, you can simply wedge it between the seat and console.

Easy access and fairly secure (in terms of not moving).

This is my solution. The little shelf was from a site mentioned here on the forum. Sorry for not having the link. It holds the gun perfectly. No rattling and cost somewhere around $30. I suppose I need to say that I have CCW privileges due to being a retired police sergeant.

I prefer to carry on my person at all times but there are lots of great options out there custom seat covers with built in holsters ect also not sure if this fits cm but might be worth looking into www.gungodess.com has a steering column holster mount

Lots of shady folks??? I think your just a little bit paranoid. Traveled those roads many times over the last 30 years...never ever felt like I needed a gun for protection.

I have lived in CO for 30 years. I am an avid camper and off-roader. I have never felt the need to use my firearm. (and yes, I carry. Mostly for wildlife)

For me as soon as I get in the car, I put mine in the net on the passenger side floor or just between the seat and the emergency brake. Both spots are quickly accessible. Just don't do the pocket on the door. After lots of pratice, the door pocket is to confined to make a quick draw in an emergency.

The .50 Cal would be too much for the car and probably make it flip onto it's side. The M240 machine gun (7.62) would be a much better option. Just make sure to build a mount like the one on the loader's position (lower hatch) on top of an M1A1 tank.

That way you can traverse it around without being restricted by a pole mount. There's a catch basin for the spent ammo (hot casings will burn seats), a mount for the ammo can, handles and firing trigger all in a neat package.
