Smile How much can I negotiate for ordering 2013 Countryman?

I plan to order a 2013 CS, basic model. The listed price will be $22475 + $1000 (moon roof). The dealer offered $750 discount, guess that's the manufacture incentive people were talking about. I am wondering how much I can negotiate other than that. I understand I only order the basic model, so the total price is not that big; plus it's 2013 model. I guess it might be difficult to negotiate price, but I still want to know if it is possible. I am willing to pay the documentary fee, if that's helpful. Please feel free to share your experience, tips and insights.

Thank you so much!

The doc fee shouldn't be more then $50 and as a policy I don't pay destination fee. I was able to do $1400 off MSRP.

Thank you! That's very helpful. Is no charge on destination fee a policy for every Mini buyer or just a policy that applies to your dealership?

I think he is saying that he (not the dealership), as a matter of principal, always negotiates that charge off the price of the vehicle as it is a bogus charge.

Thanks! I don't know that's a bogus charge. I will try the same thing then.

I just mean bogus in that it seems odd to have this extra fee tacked on to an expensive item. Heck, even mail order catalogs waive the shipping fee if you spend more than $50. Also, this is an equalized fee...so everyone in the US pays the same price regardless of how much it actually costs to get to your location. So to have it be presented as a separate and specific cost is somewhat "bogus". It is government mandated to be done this way so it is not bogus in that sense. In the end it gives you a specific firm number to negotiate off. Good luck with the haggling, that is the only thing that ruins an otherwise fun experience of getting a new car.

4.5-6% off MSRP is a nice deal. Dealer mark up over invoice is 9%. MINI doesnt have dealer Holdbacks & they do receive manufacturer incentives (such as marketing/promo)
My dealer does ZERO marketing or advertising, they simply pocket this incentive/payout.

getting the % off MSRP plus any Manufacturer Incentive ($750 certificate)* is a tough deal to haggle but not impossible.

Finance outside of BMW Credit. Do the research, even for leases this is possible. BMW Credit is simply insane w/ their rates, especially on a vehicle that has a ~60% Residual

you'd probably be able to have more flexibility for a lot model rather than a special order, especially if you were to consider a 2012 model which i'm sure they'll be looking to start thinning inventory.

on my 2012, i got them over 10% under msrp, then bundled in additional options (driving lights, all weather floor mats, boot liner, boot and side stripes, f&r mud flaps and an arm rest) and still came out about 5% under msrp. at the time financing was also having a .9%/1.9%/2.9% for 4, 5 or 6 year financing promo too so that wasn't a bad deal.

also depends on where you are... what might be selling like hotcakes here in TX with little to no "deals" available might have some negotiation room in another part of the country. They can't keep countryman on the lots here this past summer so I didn't get much off the sticker. The are currently doing the not normal sales event and my local dealer is starting with an automatic $750 off any MINI, and you can get the 0.9% APR for up to 60 months with good credit. if doing it again I'd probalby order one vs. off the lot, but I'm very happy with my countryman S, just a few things I'd add now that I've had it a couple months.

Hi guys, thanks for the follow-up discussion to my original post. It turned out that I just ordered a 2012 CM in Bright Yellow. There are bright yellow CMs in lots somewhere in US, but none of them has a bright yellow roof and leather seats. So I decided to just order one. Here is the deal I got: MSRP $26950 including $700 destination charge, and I pay $25550, so it's $1400 lower than MSRP.

After reading you guys' post, I felt that I didn't negotiate well at all. The dealer was very difficult to negotiate as he emphasized that the car is not produced yet, but it is 2012 model after all. Anyway, I already paid the $1000 for deposit and the order is already placed. My question here is: Is it possible for me to negotiate further with him once the car is here? I don't want to get a better deal than everyone else in my situation, but I don't want to get the worst deal either. I am not good at negotiating. So your suggestions will help a lot! Thanks in advance.

Unless the deposit is refundable, you're pretty much stuck. Unless you find another dealer that's willing to beat your current offer by >$1000, you'd have a net loss to walk away from the current deal. In that light, I dunno what leverage you'd have.

i wouldn't say that's a horrible price and you got the car you actually wanted. there's another thread here where people said they paid flat msrp or even above (i believe it was in portland).

if you feel that you want to do a little bit better, when you take delivery and sit down with financing, beat them down on some of the warranty option packages or interest rate if you think you might be taking them.

don't let it put a sour taste in your mouth about your purchase the CM is a great car, you'll love it.

Thank you for the comforting. They gave me the interest rate 0.9% for 5 years. I am happy about that. So what warranty option packages do people usually get? What are the better packages that I can target at? Thanks.

First things first. This is the Internet. You'll find everything here. There are people that have paid MSRP 'just because', and you'll find people that just weren't going to pay more than they wanted and eventually got $2300 off MSRP. Those seem to more or less be the extremes I've seen.

I ordered a 2012 CM in July that I picked up in Sept. (About three weeks ago). From my experience pitting two NYC area dealers against each other for a best price, I'd say you got a good deal. Maybe not an 'insane' deal, but I suspect only insane people have the patience to negotiate that much.

What is insane is the 0.9% financing (which we ended up with as well, although we originally ordered when it was 1.9%). They'll explain when you take delivery, but for us by the time the car has been paid off (5 years) we'll have spent a total of $600 on interest. While that's not money off the MSRP, that low rate can have a pretty substantial impact on monthly payments. I think ours went down $15 from what we thought it was going to be when it was $1.9%. That's $750 saved.

So yeah, you did good.

they will offer a really expensive whee/tire warranty. I'd say pass on that.
they should offer a Paint Protection pkg. (Resitall). Its basically a miricale wax & armour all.
*(I actually did this for $300/5yrs coverage). It's really like an insurance premium w/a a detail if you ask me. It does cover thinks lie ripped seats/stitching, stained carpet, etc.
As a DIY'er, the screwdriver in rear pocket vision made me pull the trigger on this.

Another option might be an extended Warranty- Are you really gooing to keep the car that long? they are likely not going to cover a lot of things like the clutch issues as they are fighting it now @ under 1yr ownership.
(getting a solid claim will be tough) I'd pass this as well.

One thing to note about the tire/wheel warranty is that it covers damage to the tires or rims, but it doesn't cover non-damage replacement. So if you needed to replace tires due to wear, it's not covered. To me that made me decide that it wasn't likely to be worth it.

If you do end up with a few flats and/or damaged rims you could easily get to the cost of the plan, but I figured it was worth the risk.

We didn't end up getting any of the add-ons. We may look into the extended warranty at some point before the real one runs out. I think you can get it up to 6 months before it ends, so we've got time to think about it. I suspect we'll probably eventually get it, but it's not worth committing to the cost outlay now.

Thank you so much! It totally makes sense. I felt much better now. Cannot wait to receive the car!

Thank you for the information and the suggestions. It is very helpful to me. I will do more research on this topic on this site while waiting for my car.

Thanks! If I plan to replace all the tires to non-run flat tires, should I still get the tire warranty? I usually just get the free warranty for car. So if the add-ons have to be purchased, I might just pass.

they do have to be purchased, and if your going to swap the tires it would def NOT be something you should purchase. You got a good deal, best deal? probably not but it beat mine so there you go. :-) I got 1K off my sticker of 28500, paid 27500... and if someone else saved another 1K, great... I am loving my car so its all relative.
