R60 Tensioner 'recall' / oil drip
Tensioner 'recall' / oil drip
My Countryman started dripping oil. It was coming from the left rear of the engine if you were looking at the engine. Took it to the dealer, SA stated that there is a "recall" for it that recently came out. There is a known issue with the chain tensioner being too short and causing it to leak.
Paperwork says "M11 05 12, Check Chain tensioner leak". They said it'll take about an hour to fix. I haven't found much on the forums for this issue with the Countryman, but certainly lots of posts about earlier models regarding this.

Final paperwork says "23759 FAULTY TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER SEALING RING REMOVED TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER. REMOVED AND REPLACED TENSIONER SEALING RING. REINSTALLED TIMING CHAING TENSIONER. PER SI M11 05 12."
So it would seem that all they did was replace the seal and not the tensioner based on the paperwork...
"SI M11 05 12" refers to a Service Bulletin published by BMW.
Service Bulletins are published to assist dealers, technicians and others to identify issues, correctly make repairs, and address customer concerns and complaints.
The specific Service Bulletin above is not associated with a recall (where owners are proactively requested by the manufacturer via mail and other means to bring their vehicles to the dealer for a specific update or inspection), but some Service Bulletins do refer to specific recalls.
In Alien's case the SA probably just used the term "recall" a bit too loosely, and simply meant that the dealer had received specific direction from BMW on how to proceed if they came across a car with this issue.

So you received a letter from the manufacturer (not the dealer) advising you of a recall? If yes, sounds like it's for a very small number of cars as I've heard no one else mention this recall. But that could be. I've seen recalls that involved as few as a couple of dozen cars.

Mine is @ the dealership right now for the 3rd time because of an oil leak.
First they said it was the drain plug, the 2nd time, they said it was the oil pan gasket, and this time, they're ordering a new oil pan because they think the oil pan is "warped" and won't properly seal even with the new gasket. The oil pan had to come straight from Germany (10 days to get here). Fortunately, they gave me a loaner. But it still sucks, the car only has 22k Kms on it.
Maybe this is the cause of mine. I will let them know.

I have an oil leak on my 2012 CM with 13000 miles. Went in for an oil change and they said they needed to keep it for the coolant sensor recall. They then called back and said that they noticed oil on a wiring harness and they wanted to replace some sort of cylinder part. I guess the good news is that they noticed and are being proactive. Still dreading the day my car hits 46,000.
Took mine in for the Coolant Temp Sensor recall and had them look at the "weeping" gasket that the local Mini mechanic pointed out at an oil change. Ended up replacing the oil pump solenoid and the SA said he's been seeing a few of these. All of this before 1000 miles.

I too, took my CM in for oil drips on my garage floor. They suspected it was the seal on the oil tensioner or the oil pump solenoid, as there have been numerous reports of each.
Mine was the oil tensioner seal. They also did the coolant temp sensor recall at the same time. Hopefully that will be all for awhile.
