New Countryman S owner

Hey y'all,
I just traded my truck in on a new Royal Grey & black CM S yesterday. The car is so much fun to drive. Anyway, I'm torn on the wheel and tire replacement plan. They want 1250 for 5 years. Opinions on whether this is worth it?

Thanks

Jarod

This has been discussed a few times. Do a search for some good info. Basically if you opt for it, talk them down, the price IS negotiable. I thought though that the wheel/tire plan had to be purchased at time of car purchase. Are you sure you can still get it?

And Congrats!!!!!

Most MINI folks replace the runflats since the ride is not the greatest. So I've never bothered with that plan. It's a decent price I guess, but you can usually find better tires on Tire Rack for good prices.

Thanks y'all. I've never had a vehicle with runflats on it before. Another question. Say I get an unrepairable cut or nail in one of the run flats, can that tire be replaced with a non version, or is it all or none?

I paid a little less than $750 for my 5 year RF replacement package for my R56. I know the CM's tires are bigger and more expensive I guess, but $1250 sounds steep. What kind of tires come with the CM? I would've switched to non-RF's the day I bought the car if I did not purchase the replacement plan. The ride is super firm but I am used to it now. If you've never driven on RF's you will definitely be able to feel the difference if your coming from regular tires.

They say not to but I don't really see why not, I would just make sure its on the back wheel's thats assuming you have the FWD CMS. If its the ALL4 you need to have the same tires (with basically the same wear) on all four wheels. AWD cars should never be run with different types of tires, as the different size/grip the tire would have would negatively effect the power distribution of the AWD.

Thanks for the opinions. I don't have All4, so that's not really a concern. And I noticed that the ride is pretty stiff, but I just attributed that to the suspension (not sport), I had never even been in a mini before.

And here's a pic....

Don't forget that you're also getting coverage for the wheels - anyone know what the 17s or 18s cost to replace?

I just found out that one of the wheels on my R32 had cracked - thankfully, it hadn't caused any direct leakage, but it is something I need to get repaired. (I found out about it because I took my car to a place that repaired wheel damage - they discovered it when they took the wheels off of the car.)

And by the way - black with those wheels just looks GREAT! Keeping a black car looking nice would drive me crazy, but it definitely looks nice, the way you have it there!

Skip the plan. Roads in Austin, TX are pretty good right? with your 18" wheels, the ride will be quite hard with the run-flats. you can keep them, or just wear them out the fastest you can, and get regular tires later on.

I got my countryman December 10, 2010 and after only less than two months ownership I ran into a big pothole in NY on February 18, 2011. I did have the mini 5 year tire plan so I did not have to pay out of pocket which was almost $300 to replace that tire. I was shocked that I did not dent the rims just needed to replace that runflat. I did not think I would be using that warranty so soon but it was still nice to have.

In 4.5 years on Austin roads we had 2 blow outs on our 328 coupe.. We did have the warranty, so it replaced two tires, and repaired 1 rim. All in all, we broke even with the 800 it cost at that time for the coverage. I am not going to do it with my mini. 1250, is absurd, the tires on my 3 series are more than the mini's. My goal is to replace the tires eventually with non run flats, as we are doing on our 328. I'm just going to get the mobility kit and have it in the trunk.

I ordered the same color scheme on my All4 and would love to see some pictures. Looks like your attempt to post a pic above didn't work.

My dealer pitched the plan to me for $999. I wasn't planning on getting it anyway, so I didn't attempt to negotiate 'em down.

Same here. I turned down everything and the finance guy said "good choice" under his breath.

I think that if you need to replace one and you want to go with a non-runflat it's best/safest to go with replacing a pair at the minimum. Runflats and non-runflats do handle differently and some folks have reported in other threads that there's a huge difference (see below). I'd be concerned about maintaining a degree of balance/stability and so would replace either both rear or both front tires so the car will handle the same in a left or right turn. If you throw only one new tire on there with significantly different handling characteristics it might create an imbalance and therein a potentially dangerous situation.

Then again, I could be completely wrong...but it does at least seem like a plausible concern and my personal preference would be to go on the side of caution/safety.

I agree. I have no qualms about replacing a pair. So what do those of you with non-runflats do? Did you get a donut spare from somewhere? Slime + compressor? (I'm curious how well this actually works).

I'm either getting the slime kit or the continental kit. AAA is what my wife will use if she is alone.

I think this would be an easier decision if my wife weren't going to be out driving it by herself at times as well.

What is it with all these people with wimpy wives? My husband never worries about me(at least not to my face) when I'm out by myself. I always have 2 things with me-This,

and one of these,

Seriously, I took the runflats off El Kabong pretty early on and drove regular tires until the end. I always kept a can of slime on board and I think we had AAA in addition to MINI roadside assistance, plus AT&T has roadside assistance as well with our cell service. I never needed any of the above, luckily.

Heh, i regretted posting that seconds after I hit post. My wife is a badass, and would have little problem with changing her tire. I'm the one who would worry. With this car, we'll now have the AT&T roadside, plus the MINI roadside. I think add some slime & a compressor to that and we're golden.

Also, am I right in thinking not all shops are equipped to deal with runflats?
