Spy Shots: MINI Cooper Crossover spotted in California

What's of particular note is that these two prototypes do not share the same front end, perhaps because one is the naturally aspirated model and the other turbocharged. The trailing Cooper Crossover prototype features a more typical Mini grille with horizontal slats and a fog light at each corner. The prototype leading the pack, however, features a mesh grille and lower air intake with two inlets.
Based on the Mini Crossover Concept that debuted at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, the production version appears to have more in common with the standard Mini Cooper than the extra large Clubman model. While it does sport an extra pair of doors like the Clubman, these prototypes appear to feature rear lift gates that swing up rather than being split vertically down the center. And while ground clearance does appear to be up relative to a standard Mini, these long-wheelbase, four-door Coopers are far from being rock crawlers.

Look closely at photo #2, what you think you, see isn't what's there!
The "barn door handles" is a vinyl graphic as well as the black stripe simulating two doors. In fact it is hatchback. Did they really think that dual doors would only have a single mounted wiper, and fool us for that matter? You can even see the wrinkle in the door handle graphics.
Not fooled!

Ugly as sin, and way overpriced! 29k starting is ridiculous!

Look at the third pic...looks like brake duct venting similar to WMW's.
Maybe the "5" is their "hidden" ID for that particular test car? If there were a better shot of the other car in the pic, it'd be interesting to see if it also had fives or a different numeral.

Where do you think they're going to get the money to develop low volume, low profit cars like a Speedster? By selling very profitable, mass market cars like this. Who cares what else MINI builds as long as they also continue to build the cars that you want?
In this picture, it looks way smaller than I thought it would be.

So will the MINI crossover crowd be accepted into the NAM community? Will they even want to? I have a hard time believing anyone who would shell out 30k+ for one of these wouldnt be the type of motoring enthusiast to join this community. I mean, if I was going to spend 30 grand and had the choice between a stock crossover or a JCW, the choice is a no brainer for me.
I'll reserve judgment until seeing the final version without any camo. It also looks like the doors have frames around the windows, a feature that I like. Wonder if the dash will be the same as the updated dash in the rest of the 2011 MINI lineup?
