The "MINI owners must wave" phenomena
Must? Strong word. Must one say hello to a fellow pedestrian while sharing the same sidewalk? No, but it makes the world a bit friendlier! Exchanging waves with a fellow motorist tends to make one slightly happier, more connected to fellow inhabitants of the planet. Must, no. Should, yes please!
It's a leftover from the classic Mini days and it would be cool if it were to continue, but I think the best we can hope for is hit-or-miss waving. Definitely not an obligation.

It's a law that has been on the books here since 1923. Break it at your own peril.
Cooper, you can elect not to wave and sometimes I don't based on what I'm doing in the vehicle. However, If I get the chance to I do.
Have you taken the time to read about the history of this Icon and why it's loved the way it is world wide?

I wave at fellow motorists whenever I can (which is almost always when I am motoring)....I LOVE IT! I think it adds to the insanity that comes with owning a MINI!
Although you are right, some people look at you like you are nuts and just keep going....sad

It brightens your day!! My 7 year old niece asked me once, after we passed a MINI that did not wave back, if the MINI police would take away thier MINI not being nice... I had to explain to her the wave was just a good guideline, and not a law.
hahahahha sooo funny lol
but it's nice to have a random stranger share something with you (mini) so its nice to say hello. haha it makes alot of peoples' day and makes the world just that much better of a place to live.
haha i wave to alot of mini drivers, even if they don't wave back, but everytime i do, they always have a smile on there face :D

It used to be because people who owned a mini shared a common interest, shared a unspoken bond... waving was a way to say, "Hey there, looks like you have great taste too!".
Now it's just turned into people buying it because either:
a) it's the latest trend
2) buy it coz its cute ...and i'm cute too...:impatient check me out...

You're right, if you didn't buy the mini for the community of it all, why wave? What do you care about Adam from apples who is driving another mini?
I'll admit, waving is becoming less and less common place for me... because first of all, no one ever returns the wave... and second because I share less and less commonality with mini drivers. If only there was a way to differentiate between those who "drive" and those who "motor".
Why do Harley owners wave to each other?

Why do Harley owners wave to each other?
Howdy all. We're former Jeep Wrangler owners so the wave comes naturally to us (the Wrangler owners are pretty big into it). We think it's fun, a sign of "hey, we've got something in common, and your car looks great!"
So it's always a wave and not a flash of the lights? I owned a TR-6 in the 70's and the Triumphs always flashed or waved to each other. It was the shared experience, just as the motorcycle thing tends to be. And if, probably when, I order that Mini, I'll extend that greeting to other Mini drivers. If they're not part of the experience, that's their problem.
