New 05 MCS Owner

BRG/W, HK, Premium Pkg, Cold Weather Pkg, Sport Pkg, auto dimming mirror, anthracite interior, JCW air cleaner

Found it on the internet over New Years weekend, Flew to St. Louis thursday night, test drove on Friday morning, purchased the car and bought a radar detector at Circuit City, left town Friday afternoon for home (Boise, Id, 1,700 miles away).

In between the rain in MO, I managed to hit 107mph, into KS - overnight Friday in Topeka, clear and sunny on I-70 to Denver. Stopped at Schomp MINI in Littleton to have the washer jets looked at. Removed the kink in the line and flushed the brakes (service item). Back on the road toward Cheyenne, blowing snow on I-25 forced an dinner and an opportunity to watch part of the NFC wild card game. Back on the road to Cheyenne for the night. High winds and a jacknifed big rig closed I-80 for the night anyway. Got one of the last two rooms available in town (smoking, handicapped first floor room with no bathtub).

Sunday had 40+ mph winds blowing snow, icy roads, blowing snow over icy roads on I-80 all across Wyoming. I was born in that state and still have no use for that portion. Into Utah, no more snow, clear roads, I-15 into Idaho, I-84 into town on Sunday afternoon 700+ miles in 10 hours or so. Washed the car before I returned the radar detector at Circuit City minus the 15% restocking fee. Home for dinner at 6pm.

After I ate, took a long bath and caught up on the sports news, I couldn't stop thinking of some excuse to get back in the car . . . don't I have an errand to run or something? After 24 plus hours in the car over a 48 hour stretch, I couldn't wait to get back in.

I have been looking at buying a MCS for over a year and I thought I knew a lot about the car but I was not prepared for how much of a sports car it really is. Granted, moving up from my 91 Accord may be part of the realization, but even so, I am shocked. Shocked that my wife doesn't realize how fast the car can be, shocked at how well it handles, shocked at the sound of the HK, on and on.

I do have a couple of questions for you all:

How long should it take to open the sunroof fully? This one seems a little slow.

Has anyone had the gas gauge, range computer malfunction in cold (10F or less) weather?

Anyway, thanks for all of your posts (pasts and future). Whenever I want to learn something new or have a question, I know where to turn.

No name yet, trying to work the wife on personalized plates. Plenty of upgrades planned: tinted windows, mesh grilles, clear bra, etc.

Oh and to answer your questions -

The sun roof is slow and last winter (we seem to be skipping winter this season) I didn't have any problems with the gas gauge or range.

Sunroof is slow...

no issues with gas gauges up here in the Great White North... Only thing, I noticed is my temp gauge is off by a couple degrees oC when it is below -3oC. Seems to be pretty bang on in the summer.

Sidenote, handles great in the snow. Only got stuck once, on my stock runflats, after 30cm (12") of snow and parked on a hill.

Sounds like a great trip!

I do love a roadtrip. Made many of them in my younger days 1/2 way across the country (or a little greater). Your story reminded me of a non-stop trip from Raleigh NC to Beaumont TX I made with my brother when we kept the gas on the floor (weak 4 cyl car) for hours at the time without backing off during our travels that took place primarily at night.

Congratulations on getting your new MINI!

POWER to the MINI's!

Welcome to NAM, and the Wide World of MINIs (WWM).
This is the best place to find information that you did not even know you needed.
Happy Motoring.
