MC40 production number

Cant figure out my production number. The plaque is not in car as I bought it used. Anyone know where I can go and get answer? I checkd my authorized MINI dealer and they had no answer. Thought I would try MNI USA.

I'm also interested to know if anyone can answer this question. I was able to find out that my MC was built in 06/02 but would like to know what my production number is too.

I'd be really upset if the plaque was removed - it makes it basically not an MC40, just a MINI with red seats and CF dash.

Have you tried putting the VIN into the MINI USA owners lounge - does that give you any info?

Found out dealer has to call a 'parts hot-line' for mini's and speak to a guy named Don Roper. He is the only person who can get the plaque remade with the proper unit number. Got this info from the #4 ranked mini salesman in the nation. It's been a long haul trying to get the info but I'm close to knowing! I called MINI-USA and they could not tell me!

Enjoy your MC40. Any numbered-series LE car will hold value well, and the MC40 looks like a winner here.

Me? I'm holding out for MC50 in '09.

Good story about tracking down your production number. Boos to whoever kept the original plaque tho :impatient

I don't want to burst your bubble here but that is just not true.

After getting TWO, independent appraisers to look at my car, I was told its MUCH harder to resell ... anytime a carmaker slaps a number of a car ... its become more of a niche market ... not for the wholesale auctions ... MUCH harder to sell to the masses. The masses could care less about numbered, high production vehicles.

Surely "the masses" simply don't care if it's numbered or not - so it's not any harder to sell than any other similar spec car, but simply harder to sell at the higher price which might be expected because of it's limitedness?

Unless you know the original selling dealership, and they still have records from 2004 (doubtful), or you have the original owner information, there is no way to match an MC40 to a x/1000 number plate. The VIN tells you nothing concerning the MC40 package.

Your build date is on the sticker inside the driver's side door jamb. The MC40 was produced only one year (in 2004). It's possible that yours may have been built in late '03 but I doubt a 2004 MC40 was built as early as June 2002.

Yep, i talked to the guys that built the first one for MINI to show for the business pitch on the MC40. He signed it under the rear seat.

Some dealers might have record and for a while, it would be digging up the original dealer, also people could find out emailing MINIUSA. Yet some said they got no info.

The MC40 were late stock red R53 MCS with White roofs then converted from what they told me. Produced in late 2003. No 2002 that i know of.

Watch as some have been torn apart and maybe got a transplant clean R53 to turn it into a MC40.

Way back machine has the old MC40 site. You can dig through that an maybe get lucky.

Check those old sites out. The MINI Mc40 should be 2003-2004 production. Unless maybe it was one the first few, i talked to the guy whom built the first one and he told me it was in 2003 late MINI meeting.

From what I have read, the general production cycle is to start a mode year in Sep and end in May (or July). They need time to make production line adjustments and retool for the next model year. So if we are talking production of a standard MCS for the 2004 model year, it should be 09/03 to as late as 07/04. Remember, the MC40 was not a factory option. It was retrofitted at the port. They had a warehouse full of MC40 kits sitting around and in no particular order, they would randomly grab a white topped red MCS and an MC40 kit and do a parts swap at the dock.

That is why as you read through this thread you see that the advice on finding the build number changed as BMW quit supporting the 2004 model year cars.
You are going to have to do a VIN search, find the original dealer, find the original owner and ask them if they remember the build number on the plaque. You may get lucky with CM40.com using the wayback machine. You can try doing an MC40 search on VINWIKI and see if the previous owner had registered it there as well. We no longer have the ability to make a simple phone call to MiniUSA and get any assistance.

Hope this helps
Jeff

Use this link and click on the "Where are they?" tab to the left. The website is no longer active. It shows previously registered MC40s but only where they were located at the time of registration so that could have changed. Example: Mine is #826 and registered in Alliance, TX but sold to me three years ago and now resides in Colleyville, TX. Your VIN will simply detail it's a MINI S and not an MC40 since the VIN is not associated with the MC40 package that was just an appearance option. JR above is absolutely correct. Unless you can track down the original dealer and/or owner, you're out of luck for the correct plate. It's remotely possible you could backtrack your car's owners by going through your states' vehicle registration and/or licensing process but if it's like Texas that method was eliminated years ago due to privacy concerns.https://web.archive.org/web/20160312065958/http://mc40.com/

Another bit of information I've run across during my MC40 research: The first 80 cars will be produced in February at the Oxford plant with final touches being applied at the Ports. Once the vehicles are completed at the port, one vehicle per dealer will be assigned in March with the remainder being evenly built until June. Each car will come with a plaque with Paddy Hopkirk’s engraved autograph and will be individually numbered from 1 to 1,000.

Any new information with researching production numbers? I'm looking at picking up an MC40, but I'm concerned the plaque is missing.

If you can find the dealer it was bought from most likely close to it.
