Should I wait?

Hey everyone,

If you couldn't already tell, I am new to the forum. I am MedicMan55, and I currently drive an '86 Corvette. I am very interested in buying a Mini, but there is one thing bugging me.
The '07 is coming out real soon, and I was wondering if I should wait for it or should I order one of the last Mark 1 Minis?

Hello everyone!

Welcome to the forum!

I personally like the current Mini (2006 and older) because it's smaller than the newer Mini. But the newer Mini because of the Turbo will probably get better gas mileage.

But you better hurry up. In fact it might be too late to order a 2006 model. You might not have a choice (unless you want to buy used or if a dealer has the car you want in stock)

You were right, I just tried to enter the site and its closed. They are probably adding the new Mini.

Welcome to NAM, MedicMan55! I was just on miniusa.com and it looked like you can still use the configurator to build a 2006 car. If you do think you'd like to try to get an 06, you might try configuring one and sending it to a local dealer (you can do this through the configurator). The worst that can happen is that they tell you it's too late to order.

I ordered a 2006 in July for a few reasons: 1) needed to really start thinking about replacing my car soon rather than in January, 2) just didn't know enough detail about the 07 options and pricing, 3) the current model is pretty well proven reliability-wise.

Either way you will end up with a great little car!

Welcome!

You should consider two things
  1. The first year of any model is bound to have bugs. Those buying the first year will be the ones sorting out the bugs for those that follow
  2. Most likely, 2006 resale value will drop like a rock.
A dilemma

Medic, I was in the same boat (though I was walking away from a '69 Camaro). I opted to go with the '06, mainly for it having its kinks worked out and having an already-in-place aftermarket. There may well be some advantages to the '07 -- but it was too much of an unknown. Upon delivery, I can start tinkering and tweeking it into what I want and need it to be -- and not having to wait for the community to develop (worst case scenario).

But yeah, it might be too late. Go find out if you have the option before you excert brain cycles trying to figure it out.

And good luck.

Most car experts suggest that the 2006 may become an instant classic because it is the last year of the R53 which has had such great success and because it is the best of the R53 run...We opted for the 2006 MCS

Certainly a personal choice. I opted to get into the '06 because I've driven the current generation Mini's a few times and just really like them. I even had a chance to drive one all out at a race track, they're just a blast. I like the options I picked and am looking forward to modding it some time down line, there are lots of mods readily available...

To me the '07's are still somewhat an unknown. Though you can read all about them on www.mini2.com now. Official word is out...

Even after seeing the details on the '07's I'm still very happy with getting into the current gen. Turbo versus supercharger, the new interior design, the new exterior styling tweaks (though honeslty it's not as bad as I initially feared). Honestly I think it's all good whichever way you decide...

PS. Welcome to NAM! One thing you'll find here are an endless supply of helpful friendly folks all joined together by their love of Mini's!
