How do I know if I have LSD?

I ordered the LSD for my Cooper S, but how else can I find out if I really have it or not?

I know I don't get a lot of torque steer off the line like I did in my old FWD VR6 Jetta, but I am not sure if that is a real indication or not.

Thanks!

Place one of the drive wheels on ice or wet pavement, the other on dry. Rev to three grand, dump clutch. If you get traction on both sides, you have LSD.

Try this: Picture yourself on a boat on a river, with tangerine trees and marmalade skies. Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly. A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

If you ordered the factory LSD and paid for it, and the LSD option shows on your sales invoice then you have it.

Whether you can drive it to make use of the LSD is another question. For most street driving you are likely making good use of your lower gearing (compared to the older MCS) and if you always maintain traction and don't wheel spin much then your LSD or your DSC is working.

Turn the DSC off, many owners now find that they can wheelspin easily when using alot of throttle off the line. Try it and if you hardly wheelspin even with a hard launch then you have the LSD but it is a passive thing and just keeps working in the background to help you maintain as much traction as possible all of the time.

There is nothing visible to see to tell you have LSD, it's internal to your transmission.

Last winter I turned off the DSC while driving on snow, and holy moley, what a difference. The DSC keeps the car going where I want it to!

pour 1/2 a cup of Clorox under each front tire. Disable DSC. Start engine. Put tranny in 1st gear. Rev to 4000 rpms. Dump clutch and WOT. Rapidly shift into 2nd and hold it there. When you can no longer see where you are going due to the white smoke, immediately stop forward motion. Shut the car off. Get out and look behind the car. If there are 2 black marks of relative equal distance and approximately 50 ft long...you likely have LSD. Stop by a tire store on the way home and check out some new shoes...you may need them soon.

Thx

Thanks minihune! For the other suggestions, I think I'll refrain from clutch dumping and burn outs. That comes after the 1200 mile break in.
