Sunroof, would you get one again?

From the many MINI's I have stored at MINIusa.com, I have a sunroof in all of them. I got to wondering about the sunroof and just how much folks like/dislike them. I have hot summers and have quite frankly always look for shade when I can. I end specifying the premium package at MINIusa.com since it has most of what I want or at least think I want including the sunroof. I really have to say, I hope driving the MINI will be as much fun as thinking about how I want to build "my" MINI, I'm having fun. Thanks for all the advice I've picked up here already.

I love my moonroof! It opens the inside of the car up and I love just slightly popping it open or sliding it all the way back! It also has the smaller one in the rear, which opens it up too! For me it was a must.

I love it!!! And since my roof graphic covers it up, I have no problem with too much sun shining through.

Yep - definitely. I liked the looks of the MCS hardtop roofline (and spoiler) better than the convertible's, so I got a hardtop. The sunroof open + windows down at the same time is the next best thing. it opens the car up a bit, lets light in, and makes it less confining. Nothing beats driving around on a nice sunny day with the roof wide open.

i purposely didnt want the sunroof. without it the car has more than enough headroom so it still feels pretty "airy" also no thaving it keeps the car from heating up, esp when you live in SFL like me.

plus, without it the roof is more stable the car weighs less, and the center of gravity is not as high, plus not having the roof is one less thing to malfunction. frankly on soemone elses mini i think the sunroof is awesome, on my own though that i have to live with day in and day out, on bright sunny days, have to pay expenses on (like if the sunroof were to malfunction and the car was out of warranty, or the problem wasnt covered under warranty) id rather go with the plain old hardtop

According to Mini-USA Corp Communications, 70-80% of all Minis sold are sunroofed. So even if you only use it occasionally, it'll help at resale time.

When we were buying our second MINI we didn't even look at the MINI if it didn't have the sunroof. I love my sunroof. (I know that it is powered and there for a moonroof, but sunroof just roles off the tonge better)

I love and I'd get it again. This issue tends to bring up some contraversy. I think you'll find many who intentionally left it off and those who love having it. I made sure to sit in a MINI with and without a sunroof, and I felt crampt in the MINI without. I was just at the track this weekend, never did I feel as though the sunroof hinder my day or prefomance, and it was likely the only reason I fit with my helmet being so big.

yeah that was the only thing that made me consider actually getting the usnroof: resale. but (although i know this is just dreaming) unless something drastic happens i really could see myself, and would like to see myself, keeping this car forever, im that smitten by it

My wife and I recently became the thrilled second owners of an 04 MC.

My wife mentioned this week that she was sold on it by the sun/moonroof as soon as we got it -- and that she wouldn't have wanted the car if it didn't have it!

I think it's great myself but that was a surprise! :D

I've had it on both MINIs (02 and 04). It's great around town, under 40 mph and under 90 degrees outside. No trouble in the Texas heat with the A/C in summer.

Hey there,

I have the sun/moonroof here in Phoenix - It does get hot, but you can get the aluminum / foam shades that are custom fit for the glass panels. They go in between the glass and the factory pull shade - they help 100%. With the AC on and the alum. shades in place - it is pretty decent - even in 115+ weather

I would have to say go for it. The sunroof in the MINI is so distinctive for it's size and use. It's one of the options I'm looking forward to the most.

In NorCal, definitely get it. I *might* have second thoughts in FL or the 'fry an egg on the sidewalk' States, but not in CA. It's a no brainer unless you're a freak about weight - and even then you'd better step on a scale first.

Ok, I lied. I'd even get it in the egg frying States, and get a temp cover in case the sun got too bad.

My Cooper does not have a sunroof. My previous car did not have one either. I drove a sunroof-equipped loaner MINI for a few days recently; the roof was nifty, but the novelty wore off after the first drive.

The added 2-3 inches of headroom in a sunroof-less car is quite appealing to me, but moreso to my husband. We both feel cramped in sunroof-equipped cars. Being the types who don't worry about our cars' resale values, we agree that a sunroof is just one more maintenance item we can do without.

I thought the diff between sunroof and moonroof was glass? My e36 bimmer had a sunroof (motorized, but painted body color metal on top) My MINI has a moonroof (motorized, but see through, glass)..thats what I had always thought.

I don't think I would get a sunroof again. Structural Intergrity.

I got in on the early car (first week 03, delivered in Sep 02) because my wife wanted it. I ordered the sunroof on my second MC because I could not do without it. Summer in the DC area sees many days of 90+ degrees with very high humidity. In this area the sunroof is useful because once open it helps to cool off the car. If there is no rain in the forcast I leave the roof open a crack to let air circulate.

The only way I would suggest not getting a sunroof is if you plan to track the car, autocross at a level where you are within a .01 of a second for a better trophy, have an adversion to sun (skin problems for example) or flat out don't like them.

By the way the weight of the sun roof on my car is not why I do not trophy in autocross.

John

All three of our MINI's have had them and I wouldn't want one without it. It significantly enhances the MINI motoring experience.

I too thought about not getting a sunroof even though I had sunroof in my previous cars and really liked it. I wasn't sure if I liked the fact that you couldn't totally occlude sunlight in with the perforated shade, but it's not that big a deal where I live in California.

Having decided to get the sunroof, I am completely certain it was the right decision. When closed I love the added natural sunlight; it feels bright and airy like a well-lighted room. The only downside is that when open, it's a little nosier than my other two sunroofs (both BMWs). But I deal with it and it's not that bad really.

I think you will really enjoy it if you decide to go for it.

Forgot to mention I'm in FL I ride around w/ the roof open under 70MPH and no rain 30deg too 100deg, and then occasionally on the highway but I ususally just leave it cracked intead with a side window down so that there is no buffeting. The rear shade stays closed during the majority of the summer and the front gets closed only when the car is parked, I've never understood having the sunroof only to keep light blocked out.
