Gas mileage for Mini Cooper S 2006

Hi, Just received my new mini cooper s 2006 automatic in the middle of december and ive driven it about 900 miles so far. I'm only seeing 10.9 miles per gallon on sunoco 93 octane, Ive switched to amoco 93 and and im seeing 12.9 miles per gallon. My salesman (GREATGUY) tells me i should be seeing close to 27 the service station is telling me that my 12.9 gallon reading is correct due to additives in the fuel during the winter months. He also told me he could run it though the trouble shooting scanner but if no error codes came up they couldnt help me. I feel 12.9 gallons is way to low. Can anyone tell me if this is accurate for the winter months.

My computer shows my 06 MCSC gets 23.5mpg. I don't know what the actual is even though I should track it. Miles divided by gallons averaged over three tanks.

Im taking the readings of the tach. Im getting 160 miles to the tank.

what fuel are you using? Im in New York City so its all city miles and i keep the tach under 4000 rpms.

My 06 MCS automatic gets 24-25 which I think is terrible since I drive it slower than my 02.The 2002 I had with 6 speed,it was always getting 28-29 miles per gallon and I used to drive it like I was in a race track all day.

I think the auto is killing the fuel mileage and anything less than 20mpg for a car this small is a serius promblem.

Check your math..
Fill up till the nozzle clicks off
set your trip odometer
Drive and enjoy
next time you fill up fill until it clicks off
take note of your miles driven and gallons used
example
Miles driven dived by gallons used

Here is what my 2000 VW TDI does
700 / 14.5 gallons used =48 MPG

Im confused if I do a fill up and reset the trip on the odometer and at the next fill up is says 160 miles driven should i take 160 miles and divide it by 13.2? also my the obc is telling me that im only getting 12.9 miles per gallon. Im really worried!

Wow... that sound like REALLY bad mileage! My '06 MCS (delivered Dec, 1 05) which I constantly rev up over 4000 rpms has been getting around 24mpg here in northern NJ! Somethings not right with your math I'd guess... unless you have the trip computer which i'd then say has gone haywire.

The question really is WHY AREN'T you revving it over 4 grand!!! It just starts to get going around there! You're missing out on the power band.

Use this method and check 4 or 5 tanks. You should also wait until you have a 1/4 tank or less to fill up. There is more chance for error because of variation in automatic pump shutoff if you calculate mileage on a short fill.

At 1700 miles I'm getting 28-29 mpg with my 6 speed '06 Cooper S.

BTW, I used to have a 2K VW Golf TDI. It is the best commuting appliance ever invented. 48+ mpg no matter how I drove it

Could the breaking in of the vehicle have something to do with the low mileage?

Im using the trip computer to calculate and its way off from everyone elses MCS. Could it be that it only has 900 miles on it and it hasnt broken it yet?

Divide by the number of gallons it take to fill up again, not the 13.2 gallon capacity of the fuel tank.

06 MSC (6-spd, but it shouldn't make that much of a diff). I haven't calculated in about two fill ups, but I was running in the 26+ MPG even on winter gas in Northern Va. Mostly highway, but on weekends I let it rip.

Your mileage is WAY OFF. Either, something is being calculated incorrectly, your car has an issue, or perhaps the car is running in the wrong gear all the time? Can you even do that on the MCSA tranny? (I'm assuming that it's the CSV transmission right?)

The break-in shouldn't be causing a 10+ MPG difference, maybe 2 or 3 MPG.

Didn't notice if you already mentioned this, but how much fuel are you putting in? Is it possible that the fuel guage is reading incorrectly and either you aren't filling the tank all the way up, or that the low fuel light comes on way two early?

Sounds like the metric system is getting tangled up in your numbers somewhere....just a guess.

i.e. If your displayed miles are actually kilometers, you will get much lower 'mpg' numbers. Might be worth a look.

If you ask me there is definitely a problem there.

If you are getting 160 miles to the tank that is an indicator of a problem. should be more like 300 or more.

I get about 23 MPG and from what I have seen most people get more than that.

The dealer should take care of this whether their scanner sees a problem or not. You have a problem.

Yeah...that's terrible mileage

I have two vehicles, an 06 MCS (manual) and a 2004 Nissan Titan (auto) and I've got a little over a 1000 miles on the my MCS and I get right at 30 MPG (both on the computer and with manual calculations). My truck (that my wife uses to take care of our horses with) gets about 15 MPG and she drives the thing pretty hard (foot in the gas...or foot in the brake...ha ha).

Regardless...if you're not getting over 25 MPG driving casually in the city I'd have it looked at right away.

I think the problem is just that you're using the OBC to calculate gas mileage, which as we all know, is notorious for being completly wrong. Calculate it yourself, and I'm sure the problem will go away.

I picked up my '06 MCS (6spd) this past Oct and I've been getting on average 27 MPG in mixed city/highway driving based on the OBC. I haven't checked the actual at the pump yet, but based on what everyone seems to experience, the actual should only be a MPG or two lower.

I'd think anything in the low teens means there must be something either wrong with the car or how you're calculating the mileage.

Good luck!

But 160 miles to the tank presuming it is a whole tank or nearly a whole tank shows something is wrong no matter how the other calculations are made.

Have to agree, 160 per tank is stunningly awful. My 900 mile old 6-spd MCS last measured delivered 26.2 MPG in 70% suburban driving with the OBC showing 24.7 (from day one).

I've had my MCSa for two weeks now. 90% of my driving is city. Filled up once. On the original tank, the computer showed mpg as 20.1, but I calculated it at 23.4. On this second tank (Shell 93 octane/Chicago's winter blend), the computer is showing 21.0, but I think it's still more like 23-24.

I know that during winter, my old car dropped 3-5 mpg because of the fuel blend, so I'm hoping for 25-27 mpg once the car is broken in and the we're back to normal gas.

**** i bought my 06 MCS 6sp with only 75 miles on it. I was getting around 22-24 miles per gallon. I was driving it as well... I get at least 280 per tank.. i would think theres something wrong... I would let the dealer ship take a look. Good luck.. Spike
